Marketing pre-release

Hey guys, as we all know, it doesn’t matter how good your game is if nobody has ever heard of it. Reading up on marketing I people saying I should spent as much as half my time marketing. I can understand this, but how do you go about marketing your indie game when you have hardly anything to show? I have no fancy artwork yet and no video trailers. With that being said, it’s not that my game is just an idea, it’s just all grey boxes and programmer art

Any ideas are welcome, as long as they’re “legitimate”, I don’t want to send spam emails to people or stuff like that.

I would wait until you have something impressive to show. I doubt you will get much interest from the media with programmer art unless you have extremely original/impressive game play. If you give people a poor impression of your game early on, it is very hard to get to get them to take another look later.

So, early in development, spend your marketing time getting your ducks in a row. Define/refine your marketing message. make a list of contacts, and make a plan of how you will eventually get the word out: Social media, blogs, review sites, forums, advertising, Reddit, etc. Try to build a Twitter following, establish a presence on forums.
