Marketing

I’ve been pretty active on a lot of indie game developer forums, and even gamespot and gametrailers (I’m afraid of posting a video of my game on gametrailers though, people over there seem really mean.) but I feel like I’m missing something. And once I get back up to UCF I’m gonna advertise like crazy and join a ton of clubs.

Any tips for marketing? What should I NOT do? What are your experiences?

Don’t be afraid to post your video and detach from the meanness of others, use your discernment to decide what is useful and constructive and relevant and what is just people being #### whatever.

Marketing is sort of an attempt to turn your product into something it is not … to spin a story about it, romanticize it, make it have values and qualities and appeals that it wouldn’t normally have. Ultimately what people buy as a result of marketing is a dream or fantasy about the item. If you just put the item in front of their faces they would have to come to their own conclusions about its meaning and value. So it’s kind of like putting words in their mouth, or rather, thoughts in their minds.

I agree with ImaginaryHuman… you need to get feedback on your game(s)! Don’t let mean people limit your options.

Promoting your game, if you are an indie without a multi-million dollar budget, is all about generating word-of-mouth discovery. As such, I would hold off on the advertising until you feel your game can generate a buzz. Start small… post your game to some game forums and ask for feedback. Change your game based on feedback and then post it to some more general forums and social networks. When the game is getting good feedback, start contacting blogs and review sites… but not before you are getting good feedback. Take it slow and tune your game… if it never generates a buzz I would scrap it and move on to the next game.

Make public betatests.
You never know which person plays and likes the game
Ask specific people you like/envy/appreciate as well as averagejoe.
What platforms are you targetting ? Only Android ?
