Mass transit. The city building game.

Good evening, everybody! Check out the city-building game I develop. This is like SimCity or, to be rater, Cities in Motion. The main idea of the game is to manage and develop the transport system of the city you build.

Although the main goal is to develop the transportation system, you also build the city yourself, because the accurate complex planning of the city and transport is important to get the great system. You may set those properties of the building, that influence on the traffic and passengers flows.

When building roads you can tune their properties, like: passing permissions for different kinds of transport, direction, special equipment or paving, tuning the directions of the crossroads etc.

One the screenshot the crossroad editing is shown. The red connection is to delete.

Here is the tuned crossroad.

The important part of the game is, of course, the public transport. Planning routes is one of the main parts of the game, and some instrument for their management are provided.

One of the featuring characteristic of it is the intellectual behaviour of the inhabitants. They not only go for work and home, and sometimes find any leisures; they may visit their summer houses, or go to the country, or visit their friends and relatives. The way to find the pass for them is also a bit complex: they can take a taxi, or go from suburb by the car and then take a subway. I have paid great attention to make the way they change routes during the trip to be as more likely as in the real life.

The game logic is ready approximately by 80 %. Now, as you maybe have seen on the picture above, the graphics is a bit clumsy, but as I think enough to make the playable alpha-release. Only to make GUI and graphics is left.

What do you think about the game, how interesting can it be? Can it interest the fans of SimCity?

I’ll be appreciate if you also visit the crowdfunding campaign for this game here:

where you can also find more descriptions and images.

I loved the sim city games, and had actually been wondering lately if anyone had tried making something similar with Unity. I’d be interested to also know how the city building aspects of this game work, apart from just the transport system. Do you have zoning like in Sim City, or do you build everything directly?

For me personally, I can imagine that fine tuning every intersection could become quite tedious, especially in a large city, so you’d probably want the game to be able to set up intersections in a some default configuration that would suit most cases, or have some presets to choose from at least. That way you could focus on fine tuning the most important ones without having to micromanage thousands of smaller intersections.

Ronald, the intersections have now one default configuration: all lanes allow straight direction, the left one supports left turn to all roads leftwards, and the right one - to all on the right.
With regard to the buildings, now they are installed each one manually. I don’t want to make the strict separation by the function, each building will have residental, work and leisure places. Maybe I will make something to build them automatically, but not soon.

Demonstration of the basic vehicle motion. The logic is not complex, but it will be. The inhabitants (white cubes) take taxies (that stay in the taxi station or in the last visited point) or their personal vehicles and move between the buildings.

Great work!
