Well, afaik Unity gets along really well 3ds Max 2009. I've heard 2010's models had some "issues", so I stick with 2009 for Unity-related modelling.
Off the top of my head I think that "maybe" you'd been playing with the "Add Vertices" tool in Max and by mistake created one really far off the model. Maybe you should check that out. One other thing you could try is.. exporting to .fbx and see if the problem persists. The model will most likely be imported rotated somehow, but you just check if the center is fine.
You could try putting your model inside an (not so) empty GameObject and use that GO's center as your new center.

Seems you modeled way off from origo. Place model around world 0, 0, 0 in 3dsmax and reexport it.
