Maya 2010 OSX: Maya couldn't convert the mb file to an fbx file

Maya couldn’t convert the mb file to an fbx file
Try exporting the mb file to an fbx file manually.

I get this on any .mb file I try to use… even just a cube… and a cube with FreezeTransform/DeleteAllHistory
If I manually export to FBX, it works fine.

downloaded the latest fbx plugin.

Ideas?.. while I can start using a “Source” directory for MB and a “Live” directory for manually exported FBX, one of the advantages of Unity is to not have to manually export.

Interestingly, opened UnityiPhone 1.7… Previously imported maya files work, even if I hit Re-Import… but if I copy and paste the file (so file.mb becomes “file copy.mb”… then it fails… so it looks like installing Unity3 broke UnityiPhone1.7’s Maya2FBX?)

I’d really like help with a resolution… Unity cats?.. anyone still using/testing OSX?
