Maya 7 vs. 8.5 export issues

Anyone else run into this? We don’t have Maya here, but I thought I’d share a bit of info that took us several “head thumping” days to sort out while working with someone that does. When exporting .FBX files, we had problems with 8.5 that didn’t exist with 7.0. The problems we ran into were a) the model is 250x smaller and its edge smoothing was messed up. The scaling problem was easy enough to fix, but we never found a way to get a properly smoothed model out of 8.5. The only fix we found was to go back and use Maya 7.0.

Hope this gem of knowledge helps keep someone else from getting the throbbing headache it gave me…

Hey,

the preferences within the version of Maya 7 probably has units set differently than the version of 8.5. This setting isn’t scene specific … it’s more like a user preference. Go to Window > Settings/Preferences > Preferences > Settings ( nice and confusing ) in 8.5 and see if it’s the same as the units in 7.

I’ve got Maya 8.5 and have no problems with hi / lo res models importing … having said this I just save the Maya scene to my unity project assets folder and open. Is this what you’re doing or are you exporting from Maya as fbx ?

hope this helps

JW.

I don’t have Maya here, so I’m getting .FBX files from the person who does.

Can the person just supply the Maya scene file ? Or do you need Maya to do it this way ? I don’t think I need Maya running to open a Maya scene in Unity …

Also, see/ask if they have different Unit settings between their Maya versions.

Cheers,

JW

Maya (and cheetah) use a batch mode or similar to invisibly convert the files to fbx inside unity, so you do need maya installed to open an .mb or.ma…

I believe the middleground is that you can have the maya dmg installed but not actived/licensed/registered and the batch mode works(I heard somewhere on the forum) but how you legally obtain the installation file is a mystery.

Anyone using a pirate version of Maya should just go and buy cheetah, and then they can legally publish commercial work and have the luxury of using a world class app thats incredibly affordable for the functionality, without any fears or reservations hanging over them.

Nice one Targos… turned a post on help with Maya .FBX files into a sales pitch for Cheetah…

Getting back to Maya though, yeah, you need to have Maya installed to use Maya native files in Unity. There may be some settings in Maya 8.5 that will fix the issues I ran into, but since my artist doesn’t have Unity, and I don’t have Maya, the easiest fix is to use 7.0.
