Maya Learning Tools

I’m in a situation where I need to learn Maya . . . fast. I’m not a beginner to 3D programs in general, but I’ve barely touched Maya.

Can anybody point me in the direction of some good resources for a crash course in Maya? From video tutorials to books, I’m open to any suggestions you have.

Thanks,

  • Matt

I like the training offered by the guys over at 3D Buzz.
The link below is for their Maya Fundamentals disk:

Digital Tutors also produce good training videos, but I’ve never viewed their Maya DVDs.

Learning-Maya.com | Modeling Tutorials - this site has some broken links but heaps of tutes.

Good luck mate

If you need anything more specific you can PM me.

:EDIT: Any of the books that come with Maya are excellent too.

Hi! I prefer purchasing the Gnomon Workshop DVD’s as both tutorial and reference resources. They offer a variety of DVDs that cover specific Maya content like modeling, texturing, dynamics, character rigging, etc. You can also find many free tuts at sites like highend3d.com. I knoe the dvds can quickly add up to a good sum of cash but I think of it as an investment in my future. . .besides, if I need to review some aspect of the Maya workflow they’re always available. Good Luck! - paul

I own pretty much every Maya DVD from this place and recommend it completely Digital Tutors is now Pluralsight | Pluralsight
I learned more from these than I did at college :x

I’m gonna second the Digital Tutors ones. They’re concise, well-though-out, and very professinal. They show pitfalls along the way and teach all the tiny details that make using Maya much more fun. They’re also good about pointing out common pitfalls.

I’d recommend against the Gnomon ones. Every time I think I’ll be satisfied with one I end up disappointed. Also, the Gnomon ones have, in the past, not been properly edited, so you often watch some guy play with something for ten minutes when he’s just made an obvious mistake.

Whatever you do, don’t buy anything from Autodesk / Alias aside from the “Animtor Friendly Rigging” series. They’re notoriously bad.
