Maya or 3ds?

Which is better? Which should I use? I do know about Cheetah, and Cinema 4D, etc…if you were to pick between Maya or 3ds Max, which would you choose?

Thanks.

Keifer

Let me preface by saying that although I have owned both, I don’t use either any more. Maya is available for OS X, 3D Studio Max is not. Max has generally been more popular with game developers, Maya has been more popular with film companies. I’ve worked with artists who use both (and deliver their work to me as an .FBX), besides some glitches with UV’s, smoothing and animation, they both seem to work fairly well with Unity.

I chose Cinema and Cheetah  A very nice combo, wich allows you to do everything Unity can do… And easy to learn too.

Well to get to your question, both Max and Maya are professional apps with all the features you need. The only question reamaing is, wich one does feel best for you?
Go for some demo versions to find out. There is nothing worse than a work-environment where you dont feel comfortable… could ruin everything, even while having all the tools at hand. Personally i dislike the Max Interface and as far as i recall, maya is the only app wich supports direct IK-based animation import to unity.

I hope this helps

I’ve never used Max, but I love Maya. I’ve used XSI, Cheetah, C4D, and Modo, and I still prefer Maya. Some people think the UI is ugly, but I love it. Close 2nd is XSI, but I like that Maya is on all platforms.
Warning its a beast of a program, so get some training dvd’s or it will own you. “Digital tutors” dvd’s definitely help in that department.

You’d have to go with Maya. I cant see any logic in having to continually network assets from PC to Mac. It is a bit of a beast to tame, like hypnotoad said, but it is very capable.

I’d recommend Maya too … although it isn’t quite as “snappy” on OSX as it is on Windows, for use with Unity if you’re serious you’d use Maya. Cheetah is ( sorry Cheetah users ) a toy, and C4D isn’t quite there ( yet ) … and forget about Lightwave ( everyone else has ).

3DS Max and Maya are pretty close in what they do, but Maya is avaliable on OSX. I like it and think it does a great job

Happy hunting,
