Is it possible to use mecanim to animate quadrupeds, or even have more than two arms etc on the rig? Thanks!
Yes!
For quadrupeds you should use Generic Mecanim, that still gives you all the statemachine and transition goodness. ![]()
For a humanoid with four arms you could still use Humanoid Mecanim and benefit from the retargeting. But you’ll probably have to add a layer with some idle animations to the extra arms when playing a retargeted animation. The retargeting part does not cover extra limbs so they’ll be left static when playing a retargeting animation.

How can we use IK with quadraped bone chains for the feet? This is almost a necessity for standing on uneven terrain or anything not flat.
