Mech Warrior Type Model/Rig in 3ds max

I am interested in making a mech warrior type model. I am using 3ds Max. I have only been using unity and 3ds max for the past 6 months… self taught so I am willing to bet I am doing 3ds Max stuff the hard way. Besides that, would I want to make all the pieces of the mech warrior in 3ds max separate. For example the foot, the lower leg, the upper leg, and then use the unity joint components? Or would I make it all one model and create a rigged model with all the animations baked in? Or lastly, I believe there are joints in 3ds Max?

What is the best approach. Thanks very much.

I think the easyest approach would be to rig the single model and animate it. It is much easier and faster to animate in Max than in Unity. The joints in Max are called links but I belive what you need are bones and they are very easy to manipulate/animate. Search for a tutorial on rigging on youtube, there are a bunch of them. That should get you started working on your own animation in a day or two. You can also create a biped in Max, it is a skeleton ready to animate.
