Hello, i’m working on a project called Merchants Of Ereth. The game will be set in a Medieval fantasy Universe. In the game you’ll be a merchant trading goods from town to town, managing several groups of ships. there will be treat so you’ll have to buy armed merchants ships or even warships to protect your groups of ships. Right now i’m working on the sea battle part. Here is a little video of the first ship firing a broadside. It’s a Galeon inspired by a french galeon of 1636. She has 46 guns. Her design name is Dragon. (note that this is WIP, some things may be improved, and the ship don’t have its normal maps yet for example)
I like your “cinematic like” camera work.
One question - would the ship have any secondary motion L to R from the recoil of the guns? That would add to the visuals a bit if it’s true to life.
I think the smoke may be too ‘thick’ and stay in a constant shape too long without breaking up into a wispy thinner smoke effect. Just my opinion - I have no knowledge of ship cannon smoke fx.

Some Ideas:
Camera, the camera seems a bit jumpy. The game Besiege has some good camera controls.
Real life ships, recreate real life ships from the olden days.
Colony building, perhaps have like a main base you can upgrade as you progress, this is where you can build ships, fix them, upgrade them. You can also have mines and farms, etc. that produces goods for you to trade.

All human ships will be inspired by real ships, but not the exact copy. This is because the game is set in a fantasy universe, not earth. But for example, the ship showed here have the exact same profile as the real Couronne Galeon from 1636. The difference with it is only that it is less wide especially at the front.
Else the camera might be refined, but as it is now the good thing is that you can get really fast from one point to the other.
For the Left Right motion due to recoil, that’s a cool idea, i might have a look to it. But i already see one problem, the ship is already moving quite a bit especially with rough sea and it may be too difficult to shoot at something if it move even more. + this is one of the biggest ship there will be, already made a second ship, the smallest of the game and it moves a lot, don’t think more motion will help gameplay.
Recoil might be really cool . Even modern ships cant fight in roughseas. At least with their cannons. And tbh if you want you can code it as cannons are onhuge servomotors. (Not caring about Ship list)
