[META] How to post with angle brackets (chevrons)?

I’m having some difficulties with posting a question/answer using angle brackets (chevrons) in the text. See this:

<these are chevrons>

When I try to use them between backticks, it even gets worse: ``. (You probably don’t see anything)

The most acceptable way I’ve found to write them here, is by doing this:

`<these are chevrons>

Is there a better/easier way of doing this on Unity Answers?

Put spaces between the brackets and the text, which prevents it from being parsed incorrectly. Like < this >, or < this too >.

Posts on UA supports HTLM so using HTML character codes generally works just fine. However the counter question is why and when do you need them outside of code blocks?
