Minimum post quotes...

So I was searching on the internet today and came across a couple of different sites with forums. There was something I wanted to say to on a post but in order to post I had to be a member for 1 week. Then as I was reading I saw you had to have a minimum of 250 post before you could create your own threads. Is this a good idea to help prevent people spam and people jumping into the forums and talking about their flappy bird clones? Or should this site and all others be more of an open book and give you the ability to post about anything no matter your status?

That is a very hard problem to tackle, especially for a forum like this. There have been quite a lot of spam on these forums lately, but setting a minimum of posts before people can make threads could scare away people with legitimate questions or resulting in other existing threads getting bombarded with either irrelevent spam or questions that doesn’t really fit into it.

Nah, lots of people come here to ask questions specific to what they’re doing at the time. If they have to wait a week before they can start a thread that’s pretty off-putting, and it’s not overly welcoming. Since we don’t seem to have any real issues in regards to new posters doing silly things (spambots aside) I don’t think there’s any real gain to be had by restricting them.

Certainly not; the only thing that could ever do is cause people to post off-topic messages. That, and annoy people, because 250 posts is a lot. OK, two things: people would post off-topic messages and they would be annoyed. And they would spam useless posts to get to 250. The three things are: people posting off-topic messages, being annoyed, spamming useless posts, and an almost fanatical devotion to the pope. The four things…no…amongst the things…are such elements as posting off-topic messages…annoying people…

…I’ll come in again.

I think its absolutely fine the way things are now. Moderators have to be put to work or they grow unchecked and rampant, destroying things and generally setting fire to the internet.

By ensuring moderators are worked hard, we all contribute towards world peace, and the safety of mankind.

I know, right. Wouldn’t want a Hippo in a China Shop now, would we?

Angry fire breathing Hippo’s rampantly laying waste to the internet? There’s a game idea in there somewhere…
