missing shadows

when using the default settings in unity pro, should my trees mesh objects cast shadows on my terrain?
I’m using the terrain engine, 1 directional light, I’ve got the terrain set to vertex lighting, cast shadows are on. Is there a way to get realtime shadows on the terrain, or is my only option to create a lightmap?

I found I had to set my light’s render mode to force pixel. It’s still acting funny, though. I think maybe my file’s got something corrupt in it because the shadows should appear farther back in the scene as I scrub the terrain’s billboarding slider they don’t.

You need to set the shadow distance in the Quality Settings.
