MMO general terms and general game development terms

General game development terms: mesh, rigging, animation, material, physics properties, scripts, GUI, camera, load balancing, client, server, database, website

MMO feature terms: movement, targeting, abilities, health, respawn, skills, inventory, equipment, auctionhouse, trade, bank, vendor, parties, chat, menus, monsters, looting

I want to discuss the general terms of game design in relation to the features of an MMO I have conceptualized. I believe that all things included in the game will fall inside the context of the terms which I have listed.

The game will be a full loot, full pvp, player economy driven game. The player will purchase expensive books from vendors to learn new skills. These skills grant abilities. The abilities will be used to raise your skills and grant newer abilities. Abilities will be used for: combat, healing, crafting and mining. Crafting will always require a crafting station.

The main thing that will make this MMO simpler to make is that all the animations will be done with solo animation clips. The meshes will be skinned to bones and the bones will be animated with move and rotate. It will be important, but not too difficult, that the correct animation be playing.

Also, targeting with combat and healing will have to make sense. The player should be facing the correct trajectory and be in range while no scenery is blocking the path.

There are many different facets to an MMO. It will be a lot more complex to code than say an FPS.

I’m not asking any questions or intending to work on anything. Please don’t ask me what the point of this thread is. If you don’t want to just have a general conversation with me, then please just move along. I don’t even think there’s anything in this thread you can criticize me about.

I’m having trouble finding good discussion. I’ve been trying to voice how I feel about game development for a while now. But everyone I talk to tends to reply so harshly. It seems everyone doesn’t think my thoughts hold any value. And it seems once one person replies to you in a condescending manner, everyone follows suit. I get a lot of people saying that my communication is sub par and my ideas are nonsense. I definitely don’t agree.

Just could I please get some people to reply nicely to a post of mine for once? Or not have the mods delete it?

Some things you may want to add to your MMO feature terms list:

-Progression
-Instances, or shudders Channels?
-Zone(s)
-Skill Limitations
-Quest(s)
-Achievements

The only form of progression is the skill system which I have described. There will be no instances. The entire world will be one map. Any player can learn all of the skills. There won’t be any quests or achievements.

Whole world on one map? Your client handover between area servers will have to be smooth and full of awesomeness.

You know how WoW is with say like all of Azeroth or all of the Outlands? Theres a load balancing system in place that makes it so the land and some dude thats 3000 meters away isn’t being rendered for you to interact with.

The player can move between zones without loading so unless your flying from Azeroth to Eastern Kingdoms or taking a portal somewhere(or similar), the map is essentially all one world.

I’m going to include load balancing in my general game terms.
