Mobile screen orientation.

Hi there,

I know it has been asked a million times before, but anyway.
I’m thinking about my next mobile game, and i strongly was sure it should be in portrait orientation.
But now i doubt it. Are there any advantages of portrait orientation over the landscape?
I know there are games that have better playing experiences for their target orientations, like driving simulators, etc…
But this is a question for games, that can be played on both orientations, what is the changing point when you pick the orientation for your game?

Thanks in advance.

This entirely depends on the game being played. For example a first-person shooter would be downright stupid to use portrait orientation unless it manages to do something meaningful with that limited horizontal real estate, such as mainly shooting up and down but hardly or never turning (around Y axis).

More examples: the “keep jumping up” kind of games would be a bad experience in landscape, whereas the side-scrolling endless runners would be a bad experience in portrait.

And then some games may work with both orientations, or even provide different screen views as you rotate the device. Imagine you are playing some first-person-survival in landscape but when you turn the device to portrait it presents the inventory and you can start crafting. Might still be an odd experience, I just made that up, but I guess there may be some use for orientation to be used as a mode change.
