Model only visible if scene view is on it

I’m having a weird problem where one of my gameObjects will only appear in the game view of it is visible in the scene view. When you can’t see it in the scene view, the gameObject can’t be seen in the game view when it should be in clear sight.

Also you can’t see the gameObject in a standalone build either.

I found a weird solution to it. The gameObject’s animator’s culling mode was set to “cull update transforms” and by setting it to “always animate” it seemed to work. I’m a noob with the animator terminology so if anyone knows why this works it would be much appreciated!
