Models and Clothing

I wanted to do a “paper doll” setup to my models and was wondering how one attaches clothing to a moving model. I.e. I have the clothing model rigged and everything but how do you attach it as clothing and keep it moving with the original model as it preforms an animation?

First, you have to make sure the clothes matches the figure. There are probably ways to force clothes to fit a figure that it wasn’t designed for, but I don’t know any of those methods. Then you can either export the figure with all the clothes you want and turn on and off the various parts by disabling and enabling their renderers. Another way is to make sure that the clothes are also a figure and that it’s bones have the same name as the figure you want to wear them, then you can parent each part of the clothes to each part of the body. There are probably other methods such as using a plug-in you buy from the asset store.

Thanks for the quick reply but I’m trying to do it within game, i.e. if I put a robe on him, and then decide I want a suit of armor, I don’t want to change the whole model, just the clothing in question.

Both ways I mentioned allow you to change the clothes on the figure at runtime.

Oh I see now, I misunderstood what you were referencing. I’ll have to give that a try, I haven’t tried parenting bones outside of my 3d program itself.
