Due to it’s great success, I decided to make another pack in this style and structure.
This time, I will be making world war 2 bunker, with modern touch. It will be fully modular, with a lot of cool details and twists. Base model will be master fbx file, with several tunnel like pieces: straight, corner, T-section, cross, end piece and so on. Also, there will be modular room pieces, so user can build rooms in several sizes.
The idea is not only make the tunnels/rooms, but also some awesome assets. For example: furniture, machinery and weapon props.
Won’t throw all my cards on the deck yet, but this is how far I am now. Keep in mind, that this is early stage of the project. Cheers!
Looks interesting… A couple of suggestions I would have would be various entrances for those of us developing more than just dungeon crawl type games. Give us ways for our characters to enter the bunker from the outside… Maybe an entrance set in the side of a cliff… Or stairway/elevator pieces to integrate into buildings above… Or submarine pen type rooms where subs enter the cliff from underwater cave entrances and dock.
A good companion pack would be above ground complex type modular buildings/parts to do barracks type headquarter compounds, prison camps, ammo dumps, etc to go along with the theme.
Props I would expect to see in images above: sandbags with machine gun nests, ammo crates, oil drums, strategy areas with map tables and planning boards, a mess area type spot…
Thanks for feedback, a lot of good things You mentioned.
I like the idea about outside bunker entrance. I will definitely do that! I already have an idea, about small brick/ stronghold type building and inside, heavy metal lid/door.
About buildings and barracks, it sounds awesome, but it will take too much time and there so, pack will be expensive. I will probably make: tunnel systems, entrance from about with small building and assets.
If the pack will be popular, I will add updates.
For gameplay purposes I can understand why the design of the tunnels are extra wide, however if your goal is realism I think cutting the width of the tunnels nearly in half would reflect a more realistic representation of the tunnels dug for WW2.
Granted on the French eastern front / Germany western front, before Germany invaded France - both sides had very extensive and almost lavish tunnel systems developed over nearly 30 years, but tunnels nearly everywhere else throughout Europe weren’t nearly made so well.
Specifically - when Germany setup the Atlantic wall - above ground the bunkers and gun nests were structurally impressive, but the tunnels going down below were commonly only wide enough for one soldier to traverse the path.
Some unimproved (earthen) tunnels would also show some diversity in the visuals.
I only comment on this with knowledge gained from reading historical content and watching WW2 documentaries, I have never visited any of the sites in Europe or Asia.
Looking beyond the width of the tunnels - the content you’ve created so far is quality work.
He, yeah, I made them a bit wider, for gameplay, so two people can exchange shootings in them and you could cover behind some barrels/boxes and move slowly forward. If it would be narrow as in real life, it will limit the use of them.
Also, where I live, there is a lot of underground bunkers in woods, even 6 stories underground (never visited it tho, too dangerous). But I have been in smaller ones and some parts are quite wide, however, not as wide as my.
Thanks! It’s only the beginning, quality will get better. I will make more awesome looking materials and tillable textures too.
Stay tuned, will post my progress here!
Just a heads up, on what I am working on now:
I made almost every tunnel piece, so user can build a lot of cool variations.
Also, started work on heavy metal door, that will be in it’s own prefab and it will fit every tunnel, no matter where you add it.
Finished bunker door, low poly version for game. It looks like this
I don’t like the Sketchfab prb viewer, because it does not show materials right, however, people can check out the geo: a328aff56d034dca8ad94ddf0594743f
Quick question… Are the eagles actually part of the model, or are they a decal? Some may look to have these type of tunnel systems for other worlds or for games not dealing with WWII. It would really be cool if they were an optional decal maybe also including some decal templates for us to be able to add our own symbols. I know the main focus is WWII bunkers environment, but if you used decals for those and made them optional, it could open them up to a lot of other uses and expand marketability past just WWII type games. The tunnels look a lot like the ones used by the Genai on Stargate Atlantis… Or they could even be Russian or American bunkers in a Cold War spy type game… Just throwing out some thoughts.
Eagles and stuff like that is kind of a decal. On the walls, I placed 2 poly planes, that uses different material, than everything else. On that material texture, there is the eagle.
However, It is really easy to fix, at this stage, so I will. I will add extra material, that uses square texture and user can add, what graphic he wants, as long as it’s square.
About style, yeah, it is kinda universal, I guess. The character will be given, from decals.
Thanks, I like how the door turned out and looks. Will tune up materials for unity a bit.
Cool! And no prob if you want to keep it that way. I just thought about that when I saw the eagle and swastika on the door that it was locking it into that genre and making that as a decal instead of part of the normal material might open up more sales possibilities for you.
I would actually keep the eagle… What I was suggesting is make it a decal layer that could be swapped out for a different one if the user is going for a different theme… The eagle is perfect if sticking with the WWII theme…
I will keep it, but in a different way.
I will make 1 plane, that uses square texture: eagle and soviet symbol. User will be able to throw it as prefab, anywhere he wants. Movable decal, I would call it
I made the bunker doors modular and they can be added almost everywhere in the bunker. Also, updated some bunker pieces with more geometry.
+++ Brb, nasty job, but it needed to be done. I organized every folder, re-imported every fbx file, so everything is in correct scale: 1 1 1
Just look at that folder porn, lol
I have not posted anything for few days and I wanted to tell why.
So here it is, be ready…
I remodeled the bunker pieces, so good, that it’s really easy to snap them together and build levels. It’s just so awesome, that I constantly build them and run around in them, that’s the reason, why work kinda stagnated a bit haha
That being said, it’s not like I have not been working on new stuff. I made a bunch of generic, but interesting assets for it.
Here is a sneak peak on SOME of the things, that will be in this pack. Keep in mind, that it’s a raw screen from editor tho… There is only 80% of the things I have already made. But there will be more!
Damn, lol, I have been posting in new forum, all my progress and wondering, why no one answers haah Fail!
Anyway, if someone still follows my thread, I have done TONS of work, just posting it in wrong forum.
I will copy/paste, the posts I did in new forum.
Bump! Update on my pack status.
These last few days, I worked on prefabs and bunker overall look.
Have been setting up materials and updating prefabs, with interesting elements. Overall, bunker looks much cooler than it did, just 2 weeks ago.
Also, just to relax from the bunker, I did an update on my Surreal Castles pack. Update is called: Surreal Adventure and it is just amazing. Lots of cool assets, scenes and effects. If you like my work, you should check out it!
So, the Soviet ammo boxes are done and in. Now started work on Nazi.
Also, I’m making the entrance building. In it, will be the bunker door.
Ammo boxes are really low poly, around 150-300, but with awesome baked high poly mesh, so they look really good.
Probably will make a separate pack for them too.
