Monitor suggestions?

I’ve currently got an Ilyama 27" ultra colour correct monitor as my main, only issue is it’s been giving me stress headaches and blurred vision after prolonged use. Also for 1440P everything is a little small at the distance I sit away (about three foot)…

I have some other 21.5" monitors I use as reference, but I’m thinking about consolidating it all with something a little easier on the eye. But I have some doubts…

The one I’m looking at is a 40" 4K monitor, issue with 4K resolutions are it’ll pound my GPU into dust (Although you can split the screen in two, one for TV / one for Laptops which is sweet)… Not even sure if a 980TI would suffice and secondly some reviews showed the colour temperature as being too cool (ironic as they have Maya open in the screenshot). Secondly I’m umming and arring about getting a 34" instead with a 2560X1080 res, although not sure it’s big enough to replace 3X Monitors.

Here’s the 40"

What do you think?

You say that on 1440p things look too small, wouldn’t 4K be worse? You also say you get stress headaches and blurred vision, do you know why that is? Is it really the monitor’s fault and will a new monitor really fix that? Have you tried computer glasses like those from Gunnar ( http://shop.gunnars.com/computer-eyewear/l/100 )? Also do you wear prescription glasses? Is it possible you need a new prescription strength, or maybe you don’t wear glasses but should? You can take an eye exam online ( https://www.opternative.com/ ). To get a prescription it costs money, but you can test your vision for free (just scroll to the bottom).

Also, one thing to watch out for with ultra widescreen monitors is that most games do not work perfectly (out-of-box) with those resolutions/aspect ratios. You may have to run 3rd party mod tools, or mess with config files, in order to get it to work right (and some games just will have things that can’t be fixed). I have this issue with my Nvidia 3D Vision Surround setup, and end up having to play some games on a single monitor just to avoid the problems.

I’m fine with laptop screens / TV’s / mobiles etc. the only constant is this one monitor, it actually hurts my eyes after a certain amount of time. I’ve had a day away (probably working 12 hour days doesn’t help either) and I’m back to normal again… If I can afford this monitor, I’m sure I’d buy a prescription for glasses

Well the resolution is proportionate to the size of a screen, usually you’d just scale everything up in Windows but it says this screen has a decent balance. Good point on the 34", might make things difficult…

I have an Asus 4K 27" monitor and it’s awesome. Horizontal resolution really helps.

Windows has adjustments for font size, etc and nothing appears too small to me.

I do wish the monitor was a little bigger, though.

If you get a 40" TV to use as a monitor, I would look for a model that is curved.

I’ve run triple and quad monitor setups for years (I run some monitors in portrait mode) and I’ve actually given myself mild whiplash a few times from rotating my head too quickly.

LG has a curved version of their Ultra Widescreen monitors, but the vertical resolution is not as good as 4K.

I’m waiting for 5K to be more mainstream before I make my next monitor upgrade.

5K wow, that’s pretty hardcore :), probably need a Titan X SLI to run games on it..

It’s actually not a TV, it’s a PC monitor ! I’m tempted to get some decent 2 X 24" 1080P monitors and leave it at that.. I was looking to try games at higher resolutions (not that I can’t keep my 1440P for testing).

It depends really because with the 40" monitor, you’re supposed to be able to carve up the screen.. So I could run it as 2X 20" 1080P monitors and switch it around when I wanted.

Just trying to find out how this “multi-view” works before deciding.

Yeah, it’s going to be a couple of years before a 5K monitor is practical.

Sorry, I saw the size and made a bad assumption. I didn’t know they made monitors that big.

You don’t have to run games at the monitor’s native resolution, you can always run it at a lower resolution. As long as you use the same aspect ratio, it will look fine.

Yeah I get that, I like to watch shows on one screen whilst working on the other.. It turns out though you can do it, one is picture in picture where you can view the second input as a small screen or you can split them 50/50..

Pretty sweet, not sure how in practice it works out..

I use one of these:

@Ony

I know I’ve seen your games … Joking of course :p.

So I’ve decided that I might go for the behemoth, I did a quick measurement and due to the odd shape of the desk and access I sit around 4.5 feet away from the monitor which can’t help. My current monitor has bleed and is really bright in some spots with flicker so I guess that’s what is causing it…

Plus big screens rule .

Edit don’t measure with your arms ha!. So I looked up optimal distance from a monitor as well, it’s 2 feet max really (according to apple and eyecare site)… One said max 3ft, even then I’m well out.

What I currently use is 3 identical 27" monitors at 1080p. I edit code on the left monitor, have the Unity editor on the middle monitor, and run Google Chrome on the right monitor. That setup works pretty well. I think the text would be too small if I tried 1440p on a 27".

Ony, nice monochrome text monitor. I’ve used several monitors similar that over the years, both in amber and in green. I put a lot of hours on a green monochrome monitor attached to an ancient TI PC. It had dual floppy disks and all the cool stuff.

One of the coolest old school monitors I had back then was a Tandy CM8. That thing was pretty impressive back in the day. I had that on a TRS-80 Color Computer 3.

Nice! Yeah I used to run an amber monitor with my TRS-80 CoCo  That was a long time ago. I should actually set up a special monitor skewed into amber only just for coding, it was so easy on the eyes.

My avatar is inspired by an old amber monitor I used in middle school.

Do you want to get smacked? Because that’s how you get smacked.

Edit: “Smiley” added for “just kidding” clarification.

Does anyone else feel old when someone links a picture of an old amber screen and you recognize the software on it?

The only constant for your stress headaches is your giant monitor, so you’re hoping to solve them with an even bigger monitor?

I of course don’t know if the issue is size at all, but I don’t think I’d personally be shelling out for another monitor of any type until I could figure out what about that one was causing the issue. If you don’t know the cause then you don’t know what to avoid in your new monitor.

That’s a bit of an over reaction wasn’t it? I’d hate to be a customer who actually meant it.

P.S I haven’t actually seen your games, it was a joke nothing more.

@angrypenguin

Of course it isn’t, again another instance in which you’re presuming I’m not the sharpest knife in the draw. I’ll obviously avoid make / manufacturer and type (WHQD, AH-IPS Matrix with high auto brightness), the next monitor I’ll go to the shop and have a look at, it’s freely available in quite a few places… I’ll know after a couple of minutes if it’s a fit as I’ll open the Unity forums at a certain distance, if my eyes don’t start to ache I know it’s the right one.

With the distance I sit away, doesn’t it make a little sense?

Plus this one has a lot of backlight bleed, I’ll send it off for repair (however long that takes) and probably replace it with a smaller one in the music studio.

That reminds me of the good old days when my dad bought an IBM PC clone with a colour video card but a monochrome monitor. When I would underline text in Word Perfect it would turn invisible. Loads of fun.

I currently have 3 24" monitors hooked up to my computer. I used to have it set up as a proper triple screen setup for racing sims. Now, I mostly just use two of the monitors for work. The third is off to the side by my cockpit setup for the odd time that I have time to run a few laps. I find that the two monitors are a sweet spot for productivity. The third is nice but not as necessary.

Uhm… I was joking. Thought that was pretty obvious. You know, you joke and I joke back? Chill.

Sorry, must of gotten out the wrong side of bed this morning… If you’d of been in front of me I’d of laughed. Damn text!.
