I am using OS X lion and Unity Pro 3.4. The packaged version of MonoDevelop that comes with Unity crashes upon the application’s startup, throwing the error: “MonoDevelop quit unexpectedly.” I have tried reinstalling Unity (deleting Unity and then reinstalling) but no success.
On a side note, the current build of MonoDevelop from MonoDevelop’s website is able to properly run on my machine.
Does anyone have any explanation as to why this is happening, along with a possible fix?
MonoDevelop in general does not work correct on Lion as you can read on Xamarins page (the new owner of the Mono IP and the devs behind mono and monodev previously and now)
naw just for being a dev trashing his working maschine upgrading to Lion before it hit 10.7.1 or better 10.7.2 going by past experience (10.7.0 is for normal end users, for devs or professional users in general it has various things that need more work than they had)
Just being an early adopter to unity wouldn’t have caused that
Fortunately the Unity editor works ok on my machine, but the MonoDevelop do crash on OS X Lion… I wish the crash could be fixed soon. I am working on an iOS title…
Got that too; Mono launched after double click on a script, then after few moments just froze and crashed; and now when i try to open a script from Unity it just opens and says “unmanaged exception” without show the script.
Are they planning an update on mono develop? This is not Unity’s fault for sure.
UPDATE: seems that my problem was caused by the boo plugin installed; it appeared in the updates in mono develop and i installed it and everything went messed up; but removing it resolved the problem of me (at least for now)
Mono was not Lion ready at that time as apple messed stuff again. Xamarin recently released an updated version that fixes the Mono - GTK+ problems related to it and in the next unity update they will likely have those fixes in too.
I love how you keep bashing Lion as if it is the OS that crashing all the time. Lion is an awesome release and very stable. GTK+ is known to use outdated and deprecated API’s in many places which is what is causing the problem. Lions 10.7.1 release, and even the 10.7.2 release, will not fix the problems with MonoDevelop; unfortunately the MonoDevelop team must do that and then Unity needs to catch up.
MonoDevelop on Lion will crash if you attempt to resize its window using the edge handles. You can use minimize/maximize buttons. Maybe there’s away to set initial window position using Info.plist or something.
whats exactly the problem?
I’ve lion on my 2008 MBP and know that it is great.
I’m not saying it is crashing nor that anything else is crashing, I’m just forwarding the warnings that even the mono devs themself brought to mono user attention.
