Heres a project I have been working on this week. Its a block building multiplyer game that takes place on the moon. and yes, its inspired by Minecraft
The example world is quite small, only 160x80x160 blocks, but the tech is capable of doing massive environments, although I still have some loading time optimization to do.
There is currently only 1 block type.
Current Windows multiplayer version (wait a few seconds at the connect screen for it to find the IP of my test server, when it finds it click connect)
Yeah, left click to add and right click to remove. The game design is actually pretty similar to Minecraft.
There are some differences though, I want to have 2 factions which can attack each other if they want. I also want to have a credits system where you can sell the stuff you collect to buy other stuff, but I also want crafting where you can make stuff for cheaper than you would buy it for. It takes place on the moon so the tech available to the player will be much more advanced than in Minecraft. For instance you would start out with a simple pickaxe that would never break, and then you could buy or make some kind of electric drilling device, or a jetpack, or flashlight.
Looks like you’ve put a lot of effort into this. Are those unity screenshots? graphics look quite good! Hope your game gets even better than minecraft!
Sounds cool.
On a more basic level, did you consider other shapes of building blocks? Everyone is making cubes as the bases for the world. Why not try some other basic shape like a diamond?
Or maybe automatically make the edge blocks look like fragments of dug out blocks.
I got network stuff working and its playable on my test server, which may be down sometimes. Wait at the connect screen for the servers IP to automatically be found.
heres a shot of someone building some crazy castle which turned out pretty cool.
I’d love to give it a go, but when I try to connect, it says “Connecting…” with a countdown from 10. Then it gets to 0 and goes back to the connect button.
Yeah sorry, the server crashed while I was sleeping, it should be back up now.
EDIT: there seems to be a bug where if a client joins they wont see other clients that were already in the game, but they will still see their changes happening. I will get a fix for that soon.
Uploaded another version and generated a new map, this one is twice as big. Here is some of the new things in this version:
-Added chat feature.
-Implemented inventory, although currently you cant do anything with it.
-Optimized loading time a lot.
-The map on the server is twice as big as the previous test.
-Added “Iron Ore” blocks throughout generated maps, this is for when crafting, buying and selling are implemented.
