Hi, I’d like to know some opinions about what program is the best to create simple music for games. SImple means 2-3 instruments, one of which is drums, and 2 others are probably some bass/pad and lead.
I’m aweful with sound, but can compose some nice melodic music. So, the main criteria is to have minimum sound related care. I’d like the program to do basic mastering, that would make the music sound not cheap and fit background for games.
Other requirements are trivial: it should have a sequenser and some instruments, probably VST’s.
Fl studio (fruity loops) is a pretty decent program, and doesn’t have the huge learning curve of some daw’s, plus has a free trial if you want to check that out.
Since there is no mention on budget. And the term convenient is rather vague. (features vs workflow vs gui style vs price e.g.)
Convenient is in the eye of the user
So i will name a few others, that can do all you mentioned, if it’s convenient is another thing. (which i cannot judge for you)
Some additional considered high(er) end (commercial) DAW packages:
Cubase (either Elements, artist or the full featured version) latest version
in case of OSX, you could also look at Logic Pro X (although no vst, but au support, most softsynth/samplers come with an au version anyway)
Digital Performer
Sonar (windows only) suite.
Reason (although no vst’s, they do have their own format for so called “Rack extensions”, and offer some of those though their store)
Presonus Studio One (full thing!), has vst support.
Protools, (although no vst, but RTAS support, many softsynths/samplers come with RTAS version anyway)
I for one use Cubase 7.5.x (full version), with several (commercial) vst plugins (not only synths/samplers, but also effects).
But have used some Logic, Sonar and protools in the past.
