Multiple particle systems or UV animation? (performance)

I would like to know if possible, what is better performance wise. To have lets say 3 particle systems or a single plane with animated UV through a script and a spritesheet?
Well, thats a very rough comparison.
I personaly feel more comfortable with spritesheets but for the current project I am on, I am going to have a lot of particle effects.

In Version 4.21f4 and possibly earlier animated particles are possible. I disagree with Gawain anyway even before hand. Network use? No. Why would you network particles? Why would it slow down the game ‘alot’ (sic) anyway? Please don’t answer if you don’t know. Sometimes it just looks better to use multiple particles, if you budget right you can use plenty with no noticeable performance degradation.

It would be better to make multiple because there’s less network use. Also makes it easier on you for changes. Combining will make a huge fps and Ms on those systems and can slow game down alot.
