Multiple unity versions on one machine.

How do I intstall two copies of Unity on one Machine? Are there any gotchas to look out for?

Cheers,
Grant

  1. Rename your existing Unity application folder to something like “\applications\Unity 1.6”

  2. Update or change any shortcuts you may have on your dock or desktop

  3. Rename your Unity projects folder to something like “\documents\Unity 1.6 Projects”

  4. Install your second copy of Unity, it will go into a folder called “\applications\Unity”

  5. Create a directory for your second Unity projects, I typically use “\documents\Unity 2.0 Projects”.

Gotchas? Yes, remember that Unity 2.0 projects are not backwards compatible. So if you are going to import a 1.6x project into Unity 2.0 you might want to copy the project to your Unity 2.0 Projects folder first, that way you maintain a copy of the old version.

What he said. I’ve got both 1.6.2 and 2.0 on my machine and it all works fine given you’re careful about which projects you open in each version (they maintain a separate preferences file so you shouldn’t accidentally open one because it’s in your recent project list).

Oops! I wanted to try the unity 2.0 demo and installed it (without renaming my old programs folder). Now, how do I get back to 1.6.2? Is the previous version still downloadable from somewhere?

Thanks,
qgi

Unfortunately the 1.6.2 installer is not readily available on our site at the moment but I’m working on that right now. It’s not that we don’t it up there, it just got lost in the shuffle as of late. Stand by as I’m going to post an update here as soon as I have a URL for folks to use.

Here’s the download URL for 1.6.2:

Do you have Leopard on that machine?
I’m wondering if 1.6.2 will run under Leopard.

thanks freyr!

1.6.2 from the source above works under Leopard (at least I could start it again, which I couldn’t with 2.0)

Starting is about all it does so far under Leopard. Crashes frequently on my machine…

Negative, I’m still running 10.4.10.
