My 3DU Entry beta

Here is the first public release of my 3DU entry: www.yoggy.bluegillweb.com/MegaPixel.zip

WASD or Arrows to walk
Space to jump
Space again while in the air to fire the jetpack (once you get it)
Mouse to aim
Mouse button 1 to shoot
Mouse button 2 to change weapon

Please post any suggestions that you have, anything that bugged you about the game. Is it too hard? Too easy? How far did you get? Did you ever incounter any lag? How do you like the sounds?

Pretty good
Suggestion: The main menu has no instructions… I just sat there waiting for something to happen. Also, the world is a little confusing to looks around at.

But gameplay runs pretty well

Yeah I have realized that the menu is not obvious enough. I think I will add a big arrow pointing at the button after 4 seconds.

Yeah, the game menu got me as well. Could use it as an IQ test I guess!

Otherwise it’s really cool. Was a bit hard to play on a laptop without a mouse; might make sense to add a key as well as right click.

Ok, now tried with an actual mouse. It rocks big time!

I guess it still needs some polish of course, but I can see it becoming the geometry wars (er… particle wars! mega pixel! mega texel! mega voxel! etc.)

The polish I’d like to see: better indication which weapon I’m using right now (in the GUI), in general better visible weapons GUI. I couldn’t see where my health is displayed. And… I guess I ran out of the things. Not much to add to this game, really; it’s awesome right now.

Same here. I love it!

Just add all-round polish, more stuff, more cyber effects. It’ll be a serious contestant.

d.

That makes two who can’t find the healthbar. I really need to change it. In the the people who have tested it most found problems with the HUD/GUI, so that is my #1 priority right now.

Thanks guys

oh god I just typed a ; after a couple lines of text… I need to go outside.

LOL!

pretty cool yog! reminds of the old arcade game tempest (kind of). 3 with health bar probs. don’t think one displayed at all or maybe i was just too dim to get it. i’ll play again and pay more attn. overall gui fixin and some polish and it’ll be great. good luck with the contest!

one note… the objects collect at the “bottom” and if you look down you can shoot them while they’re just sitting there.

Really cool. Very fun.

One small thing to improve, is to smoothen out the learning curve. The step from level 3 to level 4 is really big. Getting up to level 3 was pretty easy. Got there on the first try, but the level 4 boss is extremely hard. Had him one time but then got killed by some minions just before, i could get a shield pickup.

pete: that is what is supposed to happen. there is no way you can be pro enough to kill them all before they land.

Ok. What would you say is too hard about boss4? the bombs, minion chucking or how much life it has?

Thanks again.

Did you get to like 3rd or 4th level? Even before, they are not “just sitting there” (the cube things jump occasionally, but the other enemies are much more active)

Wow, Yoggy. After seeing this I look back at the game I’m making and… well you’re only 14 so I won’t use those words. :stuck_out_tongue:

great stuff Yoggy! definitely eye catching and fun.

i got stuck on the title screen too and didn’t know where my gauge was.

also wanted a fully automatic weapon for when those red things started going nuts and coming at me. maybe a short-lived automatic weapon could spawn (on enemy death) sometimes?

did you do all that in the week since the contest started?

Hereby I declare that anyone who plays this game has to get to the robot! Nothing can be better!

/me goes hunting for whoah-bots!

Looks really good so far Yoggy. I love the idea of an etire game made out of particle elements. My favorite thing is the moving grid lines in space and on the floor. As far as stuff to improve, the sounds are a little 8-bit and hollow, but that might be what you’re going for. I’d put an ambient soundtrack in there to mellow it out a bit though. Another thing that I’m sure you’re planning to add is differnt shaped particles instead of just squares… circles and asterisk shapes would be cool.

I tried it on my laptop without a mouse so I couldn’t try other weapons with the right mouse button. I might switch that control scheme to another button. Also if this is ever a web player having something assigned to the right button brings up the contextual menu (maybe that can be disabled with scripting somehow).

If this is any indication of the games we’re going to see for 3DU then the competition will be stiff. Great start!

Did you get to like 3rd or 4th level?

admittedly nope… i was working on a spreadsheet while on the phone, replying to an email and dodging bucknuts while i played  i’ll play it again when i have more time to pay attention. first impression was cool though. look forward to what awaits!

this game is really good.

yeah maybe an ambience soundtrack would help.

I’m lost - this is SO cool

This is the greatest indie game I’ve in a long time. If I was judging the contest I would pronounce you the winner here and now!
As for suggestions. Have you tried using a square with slightly round corners for the particles. It might look more polished.
