My alpha channel is not importing correctly

Yeah, my problem hasn’t gone away. If you have time to reject me, spend the thirty seconds it takes to answer ffs.

When I import sprites to unity, they have a VISIBLE background. No matter what spriting program I use, they still have a background. In the spriting program this background is set to transparent using an ALPHA channel. In any other program, when the sprite is opened, the background ALPHA CHANNEL is working. It does NOT work in unity. What is the workflow others are using for proper ALPHA transparency when importing sprites to Unity?

I can’t afford photoshop, so please list alternatives.
