my first game with Unity - Symbiosis

This is my first game i have been making with unity, ive been working on it for just short of a year, and have taught myself everything necessary to create this game. Modeling, rigging, animation, texturing, UV-mapping, Javascript, etc.

Anyways, I have a youtube channel (SymbiosisTheGame) with some videos showing off the game.

The fist video is just me playing around shooting some enemies, the second video shows off the weapons a little more closely, sound is included from the game in the video, and i show off some inter-actable objects like a supply box and a ladder.

This is the first video.

And this is the second video.

The game is first and fore-most an action game, so i want many parts of the game to feel chaotic and claustrophobic with destruction, but I also plan to change the pace now and then with simple puzzles or indirect ways of continue-ing onwards.

If anyone has any constructive criticism please share it  either posted here or on the actual video will work, but I check youtube more often than this forum so that might be a better choice. Read on for the story:

Symbiosis a post-apocalyptic game set in the very near future. The story goes: As the human population raced to discover new technology, our machines became more and more useful to us. As we began to explore the world around is, we attracted the attention of an outsider. An extra-terrestrial race of machines. Life as we knew it, sprang from small organic organisms, such as cells, and then became more and more complex to create a much larger and sophisticated organism, such as ourselves. We then strive to create machines to perform tasks that our bodies or minds can not.

However, this extra-terrestrial race of machines are quite the opposite. The machines grew electromagnetic signals, like ourselves, but grew with metals and alloys, instead of organic materials. The machines evolved with metal parts, rather than organic, and as such, they created organic mechanisms to perform actions that they could not perform.
( In retrospect, humans made machines to do stuff, but the machines made organisms to do stuff, so our blood and muscles is their gasoline and pistons, and vice-versa).

Anyways, they came to Earth fascinated at our complex construction, as we were fascinated in them as well. As we began to study the machines, we disassembled them, and studied their parts. In return, they did the same to us humans, and then the human race began to retaliate the only way we could, war. Of course, the human race had no chances of being victorious, and so now the world is left in ruin while remaining humans are enslaved and studied.

^^ Thats pretty much the back story. As far as gameplay, you will be alone most of the game, and I will try to incorporate scenes that games often over-look in post apocalyptic settings. Such as the feeling of loneliness, wasteful efforts, survival, and the loss of everything you know.

I am also going to incorporate seldom puzzles in the game with the combat, and certain enemies in certain situations to keep the game fresh. (Im also throwing some dark humor in there).

good (better then me,but not for long)

Hi,

Interesting work. Did you program the entire FPS system yourself? Also, how long would it say it took for you to go from nothing to get to the current project state?

Good job, keep it up.

I’d put a centered aiming retical on the screen that changes shape based on which weapon you have loaded. Also, you will want to look into making your pistol / machine guns emit some kind of spark on collision. Unless of course it’s already there and the vid quality can’t pick it up. You may also be able to leave a tiny particle that looks like a bullet hole for a second or two which would be nice. Besides that I think you have made a lot of progress.

I have a aiming reticle ( however, it is small and only 5 dots, one in the center and one on top, bottom left, right, making a diamond like shape. I wanted to keep the aiming reticule visible, but not too visible, so then the player wont get caught up in the UI but rather what action is going on.

And i do have a bullet hole effect, but it only appears randomly ( in an attempt to keep framerate high) but is an issue i am currently working on, and instead of having sparks on collision, I have all that dust and smoke and debris. Do you think i should include sparks in addition to that effect?

Im trying to get a Webplayer up and running but im having trouble finding a free site to host it. pasteunity didnt upload it after 24 hours of waiting so

i3DTutorials
I programmed some of it myself, I used the standard assets FPS walker script, and then added sprint functions, crouching functions, weapon bouncing, weapons, using ladders, picking up object, switching weapons, managing the weapons ← all of that stuff was written by me. Im stll working on a slide function down a slope, but it seems complicated to me. It also frustrates me that i worked on all of this and then recently I have found the updated FPSwalker script with nearly everything already added on it lol.

And I started in June of 2010, self-teaching myself everything, while also maintaining around a 40 hour per week job. However, whenever i wasnt at that job I was working on this as much as I could.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please say so "D
