It seems to be a reasonably common issue for some lavasoft software to be installed unknowingly which then creates lavasofttcpservice.dll files that prevent Unity from starting. Deleting the files let’s Unity start but it messed with my internet connection (probably some proxy issue related to lavasoft).
I had the Lavasoft Web Companion installed and uninstalling it didn’t help but you would probably want to uninstall anything related to Lavasoft, Web Companion or Ad-Aware.
I found someone had this problem solved here with a FRST script. But their solution was tailored for them and had some uTorrent firewall commands while I don’t have uTorrent installed. I deleted those lines and downloaded FRST from here, then ran my script. It never quite finished running for me but after a few minutes I closed it and it has still solved the problem.
I have attached the script (fislist.txt) that worked for me on Windows 10 64x, just put it in the same folder as the FRST.exe and hit the fix button once.
TLDR:
-
Uninstall anything related to Lavasoft, Web Companion or Ad-Aware
-
Get FRST from here
-
Download the attached fixlist.txt
-
have both files in the same folder when running FRST
-
Click Fix
-
If it gets stuck, don’t worry too much just wait a few minutes and see if the problem is fixed.
Just don’t hold me responsible if anything goes wrong.
