For the past 6-7 months, i was in a mild depression. I thought it was my marriage at first…I went to a psychologist…3 therapies, and we found out that it was my job what makes me sad and unhappy…Waking up at 7 am everyday…At least 3 meetings every f. day…I’m working at this major company, as the creative director for almost 10 years now…I’ve a good salary and benefits…Which doesn’t make me happy!
It was an eye opener to found out what i really want to do…I really want to be very very good at something…I thought i was a greater designer…But you know what, i’m not…There are better designers than me, which are in my team…I’m very lucky that i have them…They live in design world…they also spend their free time with design…creating logos…some motion graphics stuff etc… but i don’t…not anymore…i feel like a manager at a bank, corporate life sucks!
Now it’s time to move on for me…i’m 35…i lived the half of my life…now i’ll live the other half for myself…When my psych asked me what i really want to do, i told him that i really love creating stuff and share them with people…solving problems…I used to make games with Qbasic when i was a kid…i was so happy with making small&stupid games and sending them to my friends so they can also play…
Well, now i’ll continue where i left…I give myself a year to learn and make a something…I would definitely quit my job right now if i didn’t have a baby coming in 6 months
Having a creative outlet can be great now you can make the game you want but dont have to worry about finishing it or taking it to a polished state in order to sell it. You could also have money to pick up art or whatever you couldnt do.
Don’t let your job get you down frowni, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. It sounds like you just want a healthy dosage of you time. We all know life is a struggle, so I wouldn’t leave a stable job if I were you. Perhaps you should take a vacation all to yourself. Make games and let your mind wander.
The important thing in life is to find something you are passionate for and try to make a living out of that, this way you will enjoy your job, your family and your life…when you accomplish that you’ll be happy for sure
There is a saying “When you love what you do, you won’t work a single day in your life”.
Therefore I strongly encourage you to move on and keep doing what you love - especially if you’ve got conditions to do that.
I didn’t figure out what I wanted to do until I was 27 and didn’t get employed doing it until I was 29. Went from working construction to developing with unity as a day job. Life is so much better now…it happens!
