Just came here to say that this game is awesome. Really well done. I’ve played dozens of LD21 entries since the comp ended, and this is my favourite… except for maybe Under A Watchful Eye (also a Unity game: michaelpconsoli.com - michaelpconsoli Resources and Information.). They’re so different I can’t even compare them though.
Aaaanyway, I’ve played this for well over an hour trying to get better high scores (I’m now #2 on Kongregate), and there’s a TON of gameplay depth here that I don’t think most people see when they try it for the first time. I’m not even sure whether you intended it all or whether a lot of it emerged from the physics and mechanics, but either way it’s awesome.
I have to say it kinda bugs me when people say “the jet is useless” or “it’s annoying when you get flipped over”, because to me, that’s all part of the game. A huuuuge benefit of the jet is that it instantly stops you from rotating. In a given run I never get stuck anymore because I’ve learned to use the jet.
So yeah, I’m a big fan I really think there’s something special here, and I think if you could figure out a way to get the controls to work on iOS (no small task), you could make it into a freemium game with tank upgrades and jet upgrades and all that. A game like that would make a killing on iOS right now.
Edited original post to include a video of my timelapse footage. Enjoy
Also, thanks everyone for the great feedback! And thanks Matt for understanding the nuances of the gameplay after a few of my friends tried it, I did have to point out that the Jet stops your rotation so you can use quick changes to control your flips so I guess that’s not too obvious. But time was up by then so not much I could add really! It’ll just have to be a trick only reserved to the elite few who find it out
And well done for getting 2nd, I have tried and failed to get anywhere near there!
What really ticked me off was the constant and unexpected flipping (I assume it was caused by the colliders on the infantry corpses). Often I’d be stuck upside down.
Really liked seeing the timelapse, very cool. It’s good to know a high-quality game can be made in such little time using Unity (and with a lot of hard work+skill, of course). I started in the Flash world, where everything is super rapid, but I’ve been doing iOS+Obj-C gamedev for the past year, so I’m itching to get back into something that’s not so arduous. My next project is gonna be in Unity so seeing something like this is pretty inspiring.
Oh and I was bored today so I made a video of me getting 5900 meters, you might find it interesting, hah:
PS: I noticed you used Glitch in the timelapse, but I don’t hear it in the music in the game. Did you decide to take it out or is it just doing something super subtle?
Hey Matt, yeah I’m from a Flash background too so I hear what you say I’m very used to quick build iteration and that’s kind of why I fell for Unity, even faster iteration than flash and more powah!
You don’t miss much do you I did take the glitch out in the end yes
Top stuff, I found this really easy to get into and it ran fine on my slightly slow PC. Well done.
Looking at the comments it looks like quite a few people are having problems with the flipping. You could fix this by having the game prompt you to use the jet if you stay upside down for too long. In my head there would be a star wars like voice saying “Use the jet” but it could work in all sorts of ways.
I can also see that this would work for a mobile iOS. You’d need a virtual joystick for the W-S-A-D controls and a single button for the jet. Shooting would be done just by touching the area to shoot to - maybe with a short delay while the turret moves. I’d really advise you to get some sleep and then think about developing it further.
Also thanks very much for the timelapse video. Very inspiring and a bit scary. Did you use a tool which records the whole session or one which just samples a frame every minute or so. If you did record the whole session, it might be useful for others to have a high res version available of the cleverest bits…
