Natural Free-Aim Gun Mechanic (download + test)

Hey guys,

Didn’t know where else to post this, but I’ve been working on a “natural/free-aiming” gun mechanic for an upcoming FPS and this is what I’ve come up with so far. Obviously, its a work in progress, but at this stage I’d just like to make the gunplay a little bit more interesting and real.

Please let me know what you think and what improvements can be made.

Also, if anyone knows a convenient way to host a test build for others, please let me know, it’s a hassle to upload a whole RAR each time.

Cheers,

Hamzah

Nvm, figured out way. Google Drive looks most convenient for me:

Wow! This is awesome! I really like the concept you come up with. It is kinda awkward to start with, but once you get the hang of it you’ll never want to go back!. I know its still a work in progress, but if you please add a Crosshair and ADS animation to this great asset its gonna be really awesome! Great job man and Good luck with your project!!

I like this alot.
And my aim is on game-point.
Just needs a body, movement and crosshair(like dude said above me) and this
will be a great asset.

Cheers for the feedback guys, much appreciated!

Good and bad news here.
Good news is that I’ve done a bit more work on the system and made a test build with a few cover objects and many more targets. Most importantly, however, you can now MOVE! Shooting on the run has never been more fun!
Bad news though is that I’m away from my computer now so I won’t be able to upload the latest build till tomorrow :frowning: .

In the meantime, though, ponder this. I’m definitely going to add ADS and other features, but I’m a bit unsure about a crosshair. Wouldn’t this just make the system less realistic?

Let me know your thoughts!

Looking forward to the new build…Great to hear that your gonna a be implementing a ADS
About the crosshair, you do have a point…maybe you could make the Crosshair a feature that can be toggled on or off by the player to fit their preference

That’s a good idea, I’ll be working on the ADS along with a cover mechanic today. Will update later on.

In the meantime, here’s the latest build that allows movement. Excuse the red bullet holes though - something made them glitch out:(

Updated with ADS! Yay! Working on a host of other features now…stay tuned

BTW you may have to “Go Fullscreen” to avoid the annoying right-click menu from popping up

Great job…Looking really awesome so far…you should probably reduced the mouse sensitivity after the player goes into ADS to allow for accurate aiming as well as making the camera zoom in on the sights of the gun…good luck!

Updated v4

  • added slight zoom to ADS view
  • added cover lean (Q and E keys)
  • added running (left shift)
  • tweaked walking values
  • tweaked jumping control

Wow!..Awesome Update…The ads looks really good with the new zoom…though this isnt a major problem the sprint speed is almost unnoticeable but other than that everything else looks wonderful. Good luck with your project!

Cheers for your constant feedback, Terminator75, it’s much appreciated!

My pleasure

This was pretty fun to play around with!

You might want to turn off the context menu in the build settings though so you can right click without the little pop up.

Ahh cheers for that, was very annoying!

Sorry for the radio silence, I’ve been working on some AI to go along with this shooting mechanism.

I’ve just finished a really simple level here - check it out: (btw - the enemy does not shoot you)

Everything Works perfectly…the AI is pretty solid, they are very responsive, they will notice you if you go charging in at them or shoot like crazy around a corner so thats a big plus for you.The hit detection is also pretty good, no faults there either…So all in all this project of yours can really go places if you keep on putting the same effort into it in the future as you have done in the last few days or weeks…
Good luck! and keep up the good work
