Hi everyone, I love creating 3d models of buildings, villages and stuff like that and then importing them in game engines to give them some life so to say.
I used Crysis 1 sandbox editor previously, since it’s a terrain editor for the Crysis game, it has all the assets from the game you could wish for, vehicles, buildings, great character, even turtles and chickens.
For my modeling I use Sketchup, which isn’t really made for this game engine stuff, but it’s great for architecture, which I make 99% of time and there was a great plugin to export to the old Cryengine sandbox.
Unfortunately the plugin doesn’t work for the old engine anymore and I can’t even find the old version of plugin and exporting models manually is a real pain, so long story short I switched to Unity.
Unity is no doubt the easiest engine to put 3d models in and I love that, no need to replace textures and use a gazillion convertors, texture programs, etc.
However, Unity doesn’t really have a lot of assets by default and I don’t want to create my own cars, my own characters (other than the default ones) , trees and maybe AI, so is there some asset or asset pack that has already finished characters, vehicles, nature and so on, that is free and most importantly realistic? I found a lot of assets that are either free, but cartoonish or realistic, but you have to pay for them and I am saving every penny for some real life things, plus I am going to use these Unity sceneries only to play around in free time, so I am not really up for spending on something I’ll use just a few times to waste time and then forget about.
I did of course search the asset store, multiple times, but as I said, most free things I found were cartoonish or realistic, but too specific (medieval stuff) and I only need:
- a (few) modern car(s),
- a decent fps controller to walk around houses, perhaps with a gun and
- some nature assets, trees, bushes, grass
- if possible some average human AI (so no aliens, fantastic creatures, etc.), so any suggestions are welcome.
Also 2 offtopic questions, what’s the best way to create a train and how do I make the fps character make shorter steps? I press the w button and let go of it, but he keeps walking a second longer than he should.
