Hi i was wondering does anyone know of any good virtual music makers eg the guitars, pianos etc are built into the software and you can make virtual music and export it for use in games
I was thinking of making music for games but i cant play so need a virtual one the program i have so far is dance ejay but is limiting to one type of music and you cant do to much in creating
Does anyone have recommendations for a music creation programs with virtual instruments
also on a side note can anyone name the instrument/equipment im thinking of its like a box and a long wire going up and uses electricity or something to make a scifi type whistle/buzz i think its mainly used in like old techno/club music or old alien movies
about 1:15 in that scifi/buzzing effect is made by it i think
Your clip doesn’t sound like a theremin. It’s just a synth with portamento time turned up. If it were a theremin, it would have vibrato; nobody can hold their hand still enough to play a theremin with straight tone.
Everything in that clip will be a virtual synth… 90% of electronic artists these days use virtual instruments rather than real hardware because its a fraction of the cost… I think you could probably get a preset out of a nexus that sounds like that.
Your options for music creation apps are:
Cubase (pc) - advanced - expensive, difficult to learn, has the best sound
Logic (osx) - advanced - as above, but for osx.
Reason (pc/osx) - moderate difficulty, no vst support. Comes with a bunch of virtual synths, but lack of vst support means you wont be able to plug in aftermarket sounds like guitar/piano (not ideal)
Fruity Loops - el budget version of cubase/logic. Never bothered with this one myself. I started with reason then moved to cubase.
GarageBand - never tried this either. Never had a mac when I was writing music.
Logic is $200! It was the best deal in the industry when I first bought it at $1000, so I can’t agree with your pricing judgment. I also don’t think it’s particularly difficult to learn. It’s as easy as GarageBand or as deep as you want; you use the aspects of it you need, just like Unity.
Not entirely true… you can get tons of Reason Refills, anything from guitar loops to piano loops and synth samples. So the sounds you can produce in Reason not limited as you say. Although jlcnz is correct regarding the VST’s, so you are limited to Reason’s internal instruments, and the 3rd party loops as I mentioned.
I’d suggest Reason if you want to get up and running quickly, IMHO it has the best and easiest to learn interface for coming up with sounds and basic songs. Its got a studio like rack interface where you can wire up instruments and effects units which is a lot of fun.
Cubase is also great, if you want to take music production seriously this is the way to go. And you can pick up Cubase 6 Elements for 83 Euros now. Although with that you’d want to buy a couple of VST instruments as well, or get one of the more expensive versions which provide more instruments. There are lots of free VST plugins as well.
In all honesty, I never tried any mac production software as I always despised mac’s…I assumed logic was still a premium price, as it really is premium level software… misinformation there I guess… I personally didnt find cubase hard to learn, but to people without experience, I assume cubase/logic would be difficult to pick up.
I always hated dealing with reason refills, and at the end of the day, they very rarely did ‘real instrument simulation’ that well… in saying that, I havnt looked at reason for about 7 years… I got out before version 4 to move onto something that could produce a decent sound. I think reason would be perfect for gaming music though… I still miss redrum. so good for quick perc. Agreed that reason is definitely the easiest to learn.
