Need help organizing tower prefabs in a Tower Defense game

I’ve been working on a tower defense game and I’ve organized my towers into a prefab of two objects, the base (parent) and the turret (child). I did this so that the base wouldn’t rotate along with the turret when targeting.

This has caused a couple issues however with trying to change the renderers of both parts through scripting, so I’m starting to wonder if there is a better way to organize them to prevent further issues? I wasn’t sure if making them two separate objects would be a better solution.
