I just downloaded a trial for Unity, im fairly new to video game devolopment but me and a few friends are willing to try it out. I have researched over 2 days and got almost no where, we are trying to create a 3D or 2D RPG, singe player with a turn based battle system. If someone, anyone could guide us in the right direction, we would truly appreciate it, also I have CityEngine, is it possible to transfer a city to Unity?
Hi Vividmage123,
First off, Welcome to Unity!
hope you have lots of fun using the software and make some awesome stuff!.
The hardest thing about game development is managing expectations. Everyone has the coolest game ideas but actually making them is a darn sight harder than people actually appreciate. That being said, Unity certainly takes some of the pain away.
My advice would be to start small. Jumping head first into your idea is a surefire way to ensure it will never see the light of day…
If you have programming experience, take time to play with the editor and get used to the API… Come from an art background? get some of your 3d into Unity and get used to how things work.
I know how tempting it is to run straight in with the big ideas etc… but you really do need to build up to it.
I’d suggest trying to make “elements” of your game as small learning sessions. the more you break your idea down into bitesize chunks the easier it will be to swallow… or comelete
Make use of the unity resources page there are some great tutorials over there and lots to play around with.
getting involved with the forums is also a great way to learn! The Unity community has a strong tradition of helping others, so as you learn you can start to pass your knowledge onto newer members… this self perpetuating wheel of awesomness is a cornerstone of the community and totally rocks!
Hope that helps!
Thanks really appreciate that, but I need a little more detailed info than that, I havnt the slighest clue as to where to begin
The best place to start is by going through the 3D Platformer tutorial:
