Need replacement GPU suggestion (GTX 460)

Hello there.

My trusty GTX 460 decided to die on me today (well, right now it is in undead state, meaning 3d doesn’t work, unity doesn’t start, I have image only on one monitor and I get bunch of green lines on screen in any area with gray color in it), and I kinda need suggestion for replacement.

Basically, I can’t get proper full blown GPU (like GTX 660) right now, so I want to know if there’s either cheap alternative or some kind of good database where I can pick a card based on its unity capabilities.

I need Nvidia with two display ports (DVI+HDMI) multiple render target support (>= 4 textures at once, at least), CUDA, DX11 and floating point render textures. I do not quite remember if those are guaranteed by having DX11 support or are optional features.

Advice?

P.S. What really annoys me is that I was close to completing stuff I wanted to submit to asset store.

With these requirements you don’t really have a choice other than a proper GPU. You might be able to get something used from Amazon, eBay, or a similar site. Otherwise you may as well start saving now.

Ahem. Requirements don’t look very high to me. Floating point textures and MRTs were supported back in DX9. And there are talks on the web about MRTS from 2007.

CUDA requires an NVIDIA graphics card of at least DirectX 10 era.

I already know that.

If you already know all of this, why are you asking for advice? The reality is you will need to buy a card. Here’s an older GTX 460 listed at $100. Pricewatch is awesome for finding older hardware at affordable prices.

If you want something cheaper to hold you over for a short period, here’s a 9800 GT for $60.

:-\ I’m not quite sure what’s your point is supposed to be.

I kinda had a hope that someone can tell me which modern hardware has performance level comparable to GTX 460. Seeing that hardware upgraded several times and it was a while since I bought a GPU (and seeing that NVidia loves GPU renaming/rebranding voodoo). Same performance for reasonable money.

Anyway, based on this msdn article it looks like I’m gonna need lowest of the nvidia gaming cards, such as GTX 750. Basically, features I listed are guaranteed to be supported by device with “11_0”/“11_1” DX11 feature level. That’ll give me greatly reduced power consumption BUT performance may be slightly inferior.

What’s your budget range? A GTX 960 is significantly more powerful while using far less power than a GTX 460. If you can afford to spend $200 that is the route I would recommend.

Sigh. Nevermind. I’m in different region, which is not USA.

I think I’ll just go after one of the low end gaming gpus.

Problem “Solved”, unsubscribing.

+1. Best choice.

I’m kinda concerned that 460 (I have 768 mb version) has wider memory bus (192 bit vs 128 bit on 750) and more output processors/texture units and slightly faster memory. So I have a feeling they might be either on par or 750 might be slightly inferior. However, 750 has greatly decreased power consumption which is great (460 can be used for room heating under heavy load)

I’ve decided to try to fix 460 first though. Apparently the glitch I’m experiencing is often result of loose contact and is fixable and there are several repair centers that fix gpus in my town. That sounds like the reasonable choice.

It’s pretty clearly superior to your “undead” card right now.

Without knowing a budget it’s hard to be truly helpful. Based on my experience with a GTX970 I’d happily recommend anything in that line of cards, with the assumption that performance scales reasonably with price.

Yes, it is a shame he’s not in the USA. You can buy a PNY GTX 960 for $180.
