Need some help on where to start

Hey all,

As a history teacher at a Dutch school for children aged 12 - 18 I have a couple ideas on making my lessons a bit more interesting using Unity. The problem however is, I have absolutely no idea where to start.

I think it would be pretty amazing to be able to make content that I can use during my classes. Think about walking through a Roman or Medieval town and let the students explore on their own. Or maybe something cinematic; watching how World War One soliers are running through no mans land, without the blood and gore some action movies come with.

I assume mastering something as Unity could take years, but I am a patient man and I am really enthusiastic about Unity and it’s possibilities. I just need a nudge in the right direction. Is there someone who can tell me where to start learning Unity. There is so much information on the internet about Unity, it is a bit overwhelming really. I have no clue where to start…

I want to thank you in advance!

Cheers,

Sven

Sounds like you want to create a content rich environment.
I would start by trying to create a simple 3d model and importing it into unity.
Also run through the Roll-a-ball tutorial Unity Learn

Also have a think about why you want to use Unity. If you are just creating a 3D environment you may find something that requires less of a learning curve.

You have access to 12-18 year olds! I have a 14 year old. I tried to help him with his school IT work by asking what the teachers have been giving him to do. His response is “I help the teacher and other kids or do what I like!” I think he runs IT school department! I don’t know what Dutch schools are like but I would think about talking to the kids that spend lunch hours at the computer. You may find you have the resources to create what you’re after and just need to feed in the content. Be warned though, they will add in the blood and gore!
