Need some opinions :)

So I was looking over the props in the asset store and I realized there was a lack of ‘cartoon-like’ / ‘voxel-like’ props. There is some of course, just not much.

Because I personally like both HD RPG sort of games, but even cute cartoon and voxel sort of games. I’m sort of new to everything, but I’ve got a decent grip at 3d modeling things that are of ‘lower quality’ like cartoon/voxel stuff.

I wanted to try and make some models and possibly sell them on the asset store, but I didn’t know if it would be a waste of time.

Is there a lack of models because people don’t generally make this sort of styled games, therefore making models to try and sell would be a waste of time because hardly anyone would want them? Or, would it be a great idea? Since there is a lack of these sort of models, that means it would be a good opportunity to fill that gap and actually have some success?

Let me know what ya’ll think. I’d really like to get some opinions before I get started. Thanks much!

In my opinion, I’d try to vere away from making models to sell, the models market in the Asset Store is saturated with way to much stuff that your models may never be seen or heard of unless you can get into the 24 Hour sales and stuff.

I had a high quality model pack on asset store one time, within 4 months not 1 sale, so I pulled it off the store.
But you may get lucky, I mean if you can get your models really seen or heard of you may have a good chance.

But just be warned that’s all.

Of course there are a ton of models all together, but with the search engine, it helps a ton.

There is 179 furniture assets on there, I can either search through the 5 pages, which is hardly anything, or lower my search even more to something I want specifically, like a chair, which then shows 59 assets. Or if I go to the weapons section and search cartoon, there is only 22 assets.

Basically, if someone knows exactly what they’re looking for, they would likely look at all of that type and choose which they want, and there isn’t that many cartoon props (94 in the actual prop section).

Ah okay, I haven’t really used the search feature yet. haven’t had a need too.

So from doing a little bit of reading around, basically it seems like my best route is if I were to make any assets, just make sure to advertise as best as possible, especially youtube, and keep everything up-to-date.

As N1warhead said, the asset market is quite saturated. At least for Unity’s Asset Store.
There might be less cartoon/voxel assets. But the demand for those assets is also lower in my experience, because people who make games in that style, looking mostly for custom work, or doing it by themselves.

I have quite some popular cartoon-style packs in the store. But these days, it’s more like a portfolio. Developer see my stuff, buy it and eventually contact me for custom work.

Of course, it depends also what you hope to achieve. For some pocket money, this might be sufficient. For making a fortune with art assets, it’s a bit too late, unless you offer some truly exceptional triple A asset packs at competitive prices. And that on a regular basis.

I was looking for female cartoony character with a gun (shotgun, rocketlauncher etc), or series of guns and was surprised there wasnt any.

Thanks for the input, it’s been helpful
