Need some tips for a 2D game W.I.P please

Hello Ladies, and gentlemens! I beg you pardon for my potato english, and my lack of knowledge in game making / coding, i’m starting to learn how to make my very first game! I know it’s an hard and long adventure but i also are curious to learn how it deeply work.

So, i decided a few weeks ago to start working on an idea i got for a long time now. A tiny rpg, fantasy kind, 2D side view, nothing really original you will say! The idea is you go deeper in ruins, kind of a darksoul-like game where you just keep going into boss fights and trying to survive against the eviliest evil! But i’ve some questions for which i ask for help please, i don’t want to have just a Copy/past of a code, i would like some explaination on how to make work thoses kinds of codes please, because i want to learn the hard way! :smile:D
Some of the features i try to bring into the games aren’t finished yet! :smile:D

So far so good, the game work pretty well through all thoses tutorials i founded! But i want more! i would like to add some particular systems into my game, and i would love to have your opinion, and tips if you have some, to make it happen!

1- The healing system.
Outside of the basic healing potions, and the food you can loot in the chests through the dungeon, i would like to create a camping system. I have figure out there is only two options for make it happen, the first idea i got would been to create an item in the inventory of the player, which will trigger the animation and the dialogue with his/her follower -i’m still trying to figure out how to make usefull the follower! :smile:D-. Then the dialogue let the player decide to “end the night”. After that the player will wake up in the morning, with all his/her life. So i suppose just a system of triggers and dialogues box should be enough for this one, maybe? The second idea i got was based on Darkest Dungeon, where you have particular rooms where you can only rez your camping gears. Which i could too of course, but since i may add the fonctionnalitty to save the game through this camping system it may be too difficult for the player to reach the point B during his session, i don’t want the game to be a pain in the ass to be honest.

2- The nightmare.
I call it my personnal nightmare. I’m a huge fan of RPG, the consequences ones, i managed to create the dialogues, and the consequences, and to trigger them all along. But damn, the less immersive part is the fact there is no weather, or night / day. So the night and day can be easily fixed through the camping system which could trigger it when the player activate it, or trough tiny way inside of the story. But the weather, is my personnal pain, i really don’t understand how i could manage to bring it inside the game, but since i would like to make kind of a progression through the year in it, i may create a way to trigger the weather in specific maps when the player start to progress inside the story?

I know i’ve maybe answer my own questions inside thoses tiny explainations, but i needed some tiny tips for peoples who really know what they do and get more knowledge on thoses things than me to plentely understand all of that!

Thank you for your time!!

Cool, i recommend using trello and organize all ur ideas in one place. Its a project manager tool. Make a to-do-list and complete maybe one task a day. When you complete a task, you just mark it off the list. Example: make the player walk as one task

Thank you for the tip! I heard about Trello but i admit i’m the old way kind of person, with paper and pen! But thanks i’m gonna take a look right now about it!

For now, the player can walk, fight, fight bosses, jump, interract, use dialogues boxes, and some other minor features!

well for weather the point of being underground for long periods of time is that you lose your sense of time, if you were in a cave for a long period of time you would stop knowing when it is morning or night, this used to happen to people who were locked in castle dungeons without windows back in the day, they would be in permanent darkness, not knowing how many days had passed, and of course also no idea about the weather.

You dont need to force yourself to add weather to a game that is always underground if it doesnt make sense, the most you could do is in some caverns if they have openings on both sides there are huge drafts across the cavern and in a windy day it becomes a wind tunnel, but thats the most I can see. You can maybe introduce temperature, in winter the temperature also decreases underground but to a lesser extent.

Thank you for that! Yes you are right i was thinking about maybe just showing some holes time to time showing the light of the outside getting inside of the dungeon! The temperature idea is pretty good to be honest it could force the player to keep an eye on his body warm… I suppose i could take a look on how i could make that! thank you a lot!

Indeed, the idea of having outside area time to time is probably not the best i had, but the fact of being in the darkness could bring nice ideas of level design that i didn’t though about it yet! Thanks!
