Nettop for unity, what to buy?

Hello everyone!
I just can’t decide what to choose for a nettop configuration.
There are two system configurations:
1:
i3-8100 4 \ 4 (core \ theards) Base Frequency 3.60 GHz
UHD 630
1 slot DDR4 max 16gb
2:
i5-8250U 4 \ 8 (core \ theards) 3.40 GHz @ boost
UHD 620
2 slots DDR4 max 32gb

In the first configuration, an integrated video card is better in synthetic tests about 15%, but the number of cores and memory slots is less. But the motherboard has a socket, and in the future you can put the i7 8700.

In the second case, we have a BGA CPU that will not allow us to replace it, and a weaker graphics card. But there is the opportunity to put x2 DDR4 in dual-channel mode and initially the CPU has more theards.

I think the second option is better because
dual mode > single mode
more threads > max frequency @ core

Is everything right or wrong … xD

Neither of them. A nettop is an acceptable machine for basic everyday tasks but game development is not a basic everyday task and you will have an awful experience on it. At best you’ll be limited to mobile games. You won’t have the speed or the features for anything more than that though, and you will have no upgrade path whatsoever with one.

Basically buying one of those is throwing your money away. If you need a small machine buy a small laptop instead.

Shame on me, I completely forgot to write the main thing. I am just starting to learn C # & unity3d, and I am often away from home, then at work, at college. And it seemed to me great ideas to take something mobile and compact.

P.S. laptops are not for me)
P.S.II Everywhere where I could learn have a monitor…)))

Most people don’t realize this but nothing prevents you from hooking a monitor, keyboard, and mouse up to a laptop and using it as a desktop computer, and in fact you will almost always get better hardware with a laptop than you will with a nettop.

The real question is why laptop is not for you (even small form factor pc, it’s not advised to move them too much, unless you get rid of the mechanical HDD for a solid state, or you remove the HDD to put a laptop one). Laptop ARE designed for mobility and some are quite powerful.

Also this, I did this.

Speaking of which the Acer Predator Helios 300 will positively destroy both of the machines mentioned earlier and with it you can do just about anything you want in Unity including the latest graphical advances like raytracing.

You would be absolutely right, but I work in technical support, and on the table I have 3 monitors, 6 remotes for TVs and iptv consoles, mobile phones and many different joys of life) And I can hang a nettop behind a monitor and it won’t take any either place. If space allowed, one would think of a computer on a nano\ mini - itx

Buy longer cables and rest the device on the wall or the floor. There are tons of ways you can solve your needs but none of them will be nettops. Unless you have a good home internet connection and want to remote desktop your way into a decent machine.

I have worked in a technical support capacity for my area, on hardware that was far too old for the task it was given, and it has left me with the distinct impression that choosing a very weak machine for a task that can be very heavy is almost always the worst choice you can make.

Thank you very much, I’ll think about how to do better. Maybe I really will sell my PC and take Predator)

What about the thoughts above
dual mode > single mode
more threads > max frequency @ core
and what to focus on in the graphics card for unity, CUDA cores?

I definitely recommend NVIDIA because there are some solid third party assets that only work with it. Bakery, an alternative lightmapper that is somewhat better than Unity’s current GPU-powered lightmapper, is a good example of this.

Yeah but isn’t the point of having a laptop is portability, light to carry, and a good battery life.

Another option, have a desktop (do all game dev here) AND a laptop for everything else.

Hmmm how about Windows RDP or VNC, will it work properly or is this a bad idea?
Because the computer configuration should be enough with plenty: i7-4790k \ GTX 970 \ 16gb \ SSD
Although in any case, the graphics will not be smooth on remote PC, I think

I think it will be too laggy to use

No you cant do development remotely that would be a really bad idea. Yes it will lag, no the system specs dont really matter in this case as much as internet connection etc. Even on the best fibre internet you will get lag, stalls etc. In general doing any heavy task like development is not suited for remote desktop protocol etc.

This comment was written in 2005 and somehow got stuck in a time warp thingy

Tell that to my desktop computer

You have a desktop with mechanical drive? Jesus, get rid of it and buy a m.2 drive ASAP

You can send money to my paypal to finance that

If you want to give me the money for 5tb of SSD, you’re more than welcome to send it to my paypal.

Are you using a small form factor case?
