How about some method whereby new accounts need to physically ask a moderator to get their posting privileges? Might stop the spamming from bots?
With how many developers there are both coming to Unity and using the forum for the first time that would be impractical.
Please no. We have the system on Answers, and it’s a nightmare. You have no idea how many new users flow through the community daily.
Just report it, then ignore the user.
Maybe add reCaptcha to the sign up page or would that be bad for the privacy policy?
I’ve been a little surprised they don’t do something like that. I’ve run quite a few forums (two were quite large, one was one of the busiest car-owner forums on the 'net for awhile) and we never had spammer problems like this.
That’s an even better idea
…how about hiring someone to punch the dude that hires all the “black magic” spambots?
Failing that, I’d advise report + ignore.
I’ve cleaned it up. Thanks for reporting!
As far as I’ve seen, it’s rare that we get big spam dumps these days, and when it does happen someone usually cleans it up very quickly (maybe slower turnaround at the weekends, but still). Doing something like preventing all new accounts from posting - given the number of new accounts we have every day - would be far more inconvenient to many more people in the grand scheme of things…
Just because it’s a bot doesn’t mean there isn’t someone on the other side available to handle the anti-spam measures. Same problem technically exists for the initial suggestion in this thread. One person in charge of handling the captchas, handling the emails, and so on wouldn’t be unrealistic.
The thing you don’t see is the number of spam accounts that are not able to post a message because they get auto-moderated. So, just hit the report post button when needed for those that slip through, and don’t worry about it too much.

Kitchen sinks in the U.K.!
Plus don’t forget that the forum sign on comes automatically with the Unity ID. There are legitimate uses to having a bot get a Unity ID and be able to sign in and out at will.
So…many…kitchens…
