New developer :)

Hi all.

I’m a web developer, I use PHP, javascript and MySQL every single day at work. I’m a gamer and I once tried making some simple games but it never really amounted to anything… I once made a guy shoot arrows in flash and I was excited about it… but then it was too convoluted and so extremely time consuming I gave up.

A week ago I got the free version of Unity and started playing around, I have some notions on how to make 3D models but my artistic side is pretty weak… still I get simple stuff done.

I want to make an RPG. How bold huh? for a first game too…

I’m taking it slow and step by step to eventually reach that goal, no hurries, no hassle. Unity is amazing. It lets me focus on the game instead of technicalities… yesterday I was amazed at how easily it is to build the game and run it… it even comes with a graphics quality prompt before the game starts… I nerdgasmed.

Simple stuff like that distracts a game developer from the game… and he becomes a software developer instead, I don’t like that. So… thanks Unity! when I can afford you… I will purchase you.

I’m at work right now and for the past few days I have to work hard to focus on my main job because I can’t stop thinking of the little game I’m making…

My guy walks around and has a minimap and all… woo!

Also, Hi! my name is Lucas.

Welcome to the forums, Lucas. If you’re already proficient with programming (any kind of programming), you’ll be able to make amazing progress in Unity very quickly. Though RPGs can be incredibly tricky…

I may steal you for some Unity/Webpage/PHP/MySQL work at some point though

Heheh, if I can help I’ll see what I can do

And yeah, an RPG huh… might be really hard, but I’m planning on dealing with basic things first like moving around and exploring, talking to NPCs, clicking stuff to activate/open, that will allow me to at least make a very basic “game”, and go from there, stuff like battles, stats, items, AI… that will come later.

I want to fully grasp camera movement and placement, something that will be important at the start of the game, the first thing I want to do is, when talking to certain NPCs, the camera will move in on the conversation to give it a more dramatic feel, that’s the next “milestone”.

I’m excited about it ahah! All I wanna do is talk about the ideas I have.

Welcome, I was a very unhappy website/software/backend developer for many years then converted to game development.
Been much happier ever since… and of course Unity is the bees knees
