Seems like Apple got the iPod Touch line updated according to the Apple Store, but I cannot find any hardware differences in the published specs… Anybody knows if it’s got the same hardware as iPhone 3GS ?
Also, seems like OS 3.1 update is free to iPod owners, not sure if it’s free for OS 2.2 folks.
It has (or, if not the same, at least similar), but only the 32/64GB models; the 8GB model is the same (a bit unfortunate if you ask me).
It’s the same as Unity, OS X, and most other software…the .x releases are free, the x. releases are not. They did, however, halve the price for updating if you’re still on 2.x.

I’m thinking getting new 32Gb model with OS 3.1 and keep my current 8Gb OS 2.2 for testing…
From all indications it seems that the iPod Touch should have had a camera. It’s highly unlikely that just the Nano was intended to have the camera as it isn’t powerful enough to do the video editing that the iphone or new itouch can.
I would advocate caution about getting the new 32gb or 64gb touches as it’s almost certain that apple will pull a macbook within a few months (by pull a macbook I mean suddenly update all the features on the touch without warning). I would predict that a touch with camera and 16gb will mysteriously appear come january, when the camera production issues have been sorted out.
Anyone following closely the apple event will have noticed that a touch model was missing. Most likely it was the touch with camera. There was a slip up (probably a hasty script change) where it was mentioned that the ipods should have been 16 then doubled to 32gb and doubled again to 64gb. Instead the speech had to go 8gb doubled to 32gb and doubled again to 64gb. Er last time I looked 8gb didn’t double to 32gb. Expect a suddent update once the 8gb models have all gone!
Until then I would stick to your current 2nd gen as the new ones are undoubtedly gen 2.5!

8Gb - $199
32Gb - $299
64Gb - $399
I don’t think there is much stock of 16GB model.
The 8GB was kept for the same reason the 8GB iPhone 3G is still sold: low cost entry level model.
One has to keep in mind: the old gpu is likely more than just a little cheaper than the new one. An upgrade to 16gb only happens if the memory drops to the 8gb price but then that update would be all happening. Other changes to the model will near granted not happen till iTouch Gen 4
The cam is an ugly oversight especially as it makes no intelligent nor even stupid reason why the hell they integrated the voice control and mic (including a headset in the box) instead of a cam.
Shall we guess? AT&T had its stupid shitty little fingers in again: “we don’t want a half as expensive device rivaling the 3GS that much by offering cam to send photos through mail. How shall we sell our overprice monopol contracts in such an environment?!”
And you can be happy about your prices. We pay nearly $399 for the 32gb model and over $500 for 64gb here in switzerland. Apple just loves to rip of european customers.

might be that they generally like to do but in the USA they have far better prices. More than once people put apple on price levels in a similar range than ASUS, Acer or even Dell …
Here in switzerland the gap between the two ranges from $400-$700 against the mac book pro.
The 3 15" mbps are between $2115 and $2700, just to give you an idea on their price ranges. With 1 year warranty naturally.
I doubt that they are anywhere that expensive in the usa especially after the recent ad war drops
If me giving them their premium is going to preserve the ability for me to use computers without wanting to kill myself, I will gladly continue to pay it.
Microsoft is even worse about ripping off customers than Apple is…Vista Home Premium launch price in UK: £220, Vista Home Premium launch price in US: $230. Utter and complete rip-off, very shameless in fact.
Hypocritical Microsoft trolls aside, the rumors of some kind of production trouble and last-minute changes seem not unreasonable to me, given the evidence. I doubt it has anything to do with AT&T; as long as the touch isn’t a phone and has no 3G, whether it has a camera or not is pretty irrelevant I think.
