I have been waiting THREE YEARS for this! It is one half the price of the last version, and looks to be vastly more awesome (I am still checking things out). If you make audio on the Mac, buy!
wow - that’s an amazing deal for what you get. don’t have the money to buy now but that’ll be a definite purchase for me in the future. thanks for the heads up ; )
Looks like a significant upgrade to be sure. The interface in particular has taken some of the good ideas from GarageBand and seems to have some other smart ideas in there. Bundling with SoundTrack Pro 2 adds impressive value. No dongle required anymore either. I’m still a GarageBand junkie, though. I’m just not a serious enough musician to commit time to the pro stuff.
Being into film, I can’t wait to see what they do with Shake which has also been on long hiatus (at least Apple was nice enough to announce that it was going to be years on that one.)
I like Garageband too, but was very disappointed to learn that they borked Rewire support in iLife 08. Useless for me now as I use Reason quite a lot in rewire mode. The new Logic looks ace though, will definitely get that later on.
man that does suck (i’m a reason-garageband user as well). no update for me till that’s sorted ; )
Garageband is awesome, and finally there is another music app that looks as nice. I think the amount of Garageband content that is included in Logic Studio is a testament to the quality of that free-with-a-Mac program.
I ordered my upgrade, as overall, it was worth $200 to get just rid of the ugly. The only thing that bugs me is how next to none of the old plug-ins got upgraded, and how we only got (it looks like) one new one. The plug-in collection was the main reason I bought Logic in the first place. I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. Dropping the price to be competitive with the other DAW software is fine, but not at the expense of what made Logic Pro 7 great.
I hope the MainStage live performance module really takes off. It makes me cringe whenever I see people still using keyboards with built-in sound, rack gear, or guitar amps. Nice to see Apple doing their part to move the industry forward.
The addition of Sound track is a huge bonus, though. I’d like to have some new plugs, but with lots of new samples, thousands of loops, TONS of new channel strips (as good as new sounds) and all the other new features like comping, etc- well worth the upgrade.
I’m in… after I pay for the conference, that is.

I don’t use Soundtrack or pre-made loops and channel strips. I agree that it is worth the price on all fronts, but it’s not a great package in the way Logic 7 was when it came out.
You should check out using channel strips if you haven’t used them much. They are great places to start for building complex sounds and effects sets as well as convenient shortcuts for sound types you use a lot (amp settings for guitar, hall settings for strings, reverbs and delay combinations, complex Sculpture sounds, etc.).
It saves a lot of time when you don’t have to build everything from scratch every time. Unless you like the process of building sounds individually which is another matter entirely.
I agree, though- Logic 7 was a HUGE upgrade for every user. 8 looks to be a more ‘integration’ based release and designed by the price to grab ProTools market share.
BTW, the new content browser looks like it will be a whole lot easier to use than the Project Manager. Thanks for that.

The Final Cut Studio-esque tabbed browsing does seem completely awesome.
I definitely use channel strip settings, but I create them on my own and reuse them later, making tweaks if necessary, and then saving as new settings. Presets are great to see what other people have done with the instruments and effects, to give you an idea what is possible, but once you’re familiar with the sound creation modules at hand, I find it to be a lot faster in most cases to design your own chains than to go looking through a million presets, even if they are labeled well.
And so the marvelous different creative processes show themselves.
I use Logic mostly for writing, so the presets are a real boon although I tweak most of them. If you are using it primarily for recording and mixing, it makes sense to build your sounds from scratch.
As long as you get what you want in the end. Thanks what’s most important, right.
Mark
Indeed. Logic’s always been about giving you the freedom to work the way you want to, more so than any other DAW, in my experience. Even if I never use the channel strip settings after the initial testing of the new application, I’m glad that they’re there. I highly doubt you’re paying extra for them. Saving presets while testing the software was certainly part of the development process. So it’s not like having to fork over money for people to go out and make samples that you may never use.
Yeah, a lot of the presets had a kind of ‘Euro’ feel and a bit techie for what I do, but that makes sense since it was originally developed in Europe and probably still is at least in part. As strong as it is in Midi, techno makes sense also.
I use some presets, I cringe at some. All in all, a good balance

It happened again!!!
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
About time!!!
Can’t wait…
Seriously. I was starting to get worried.
Aw, hell. I was just starting to consider switching to Live (Max/MSP integration FTW!) and then they go and pull this. Looks tempting, anyway.
Edit: Yikes. I despise Euro pricing. An upgrade works out to the equivalent of $500-odd USD including VAT. I really hate the US$1 to €1 conversion that most US companies use when selling products here (except Adobe, whose pricing gurus reason that US$1 is worth 1.5 times €1, but that’s another story).
That’s largely due to the fact that VAT doesn’t apply in most US states (and is added to the list price in the states where it does apply). I can’t imagine many companies that would happily accept 25% less revenue on their EU sales - that would cut their margins rather thin!
Logic has been my musical app for centuries ! I enjoy it as much as I enjoy Unity. This update is great news indeed. Il would love to see some integration between both - like a 3D timeline, for example : imagine navigating inside your song with a SpaceNavigator, a Wiimote or a Wii Balance Board, painting the effects in 3D with a tablet pen, etc…
While I would accept that as a reasonable explanation, and I don’t really mind when this is the case. As often as not, though, non-European companies don’t include VAT in the list price, but apply it post-sale where it doesn’t cut into their margins whatsoever.
