Nintendo really gets it! Eventually all consoles will have to enable web browsing…IMHO.
If the Unity web player could be packaged with the DS and Wii browsers, it would make possible Unity game portals. In my opinion that would be the future now.
Seriously cool stuff happening at Nintendo.
Edit-FYI-the NEW browser for ds will support flash and javascript. How cool is that.
As I understand it the Flash Player it uses is Flash Lite, which isn’t even up to Flash 7 (or maybe it is Flash 7 but certainly not Flash 8 nor Flash 9). So it’s not quite full on Flash, rather enough to “allow the web to work” due to all the Flash ads everywhere. As to supporting Unity content in those browsers, we’ve discussed that before but I can’t find the thread. Here’s the quick summary from memory:
Wii: first we must get our run-time on to that platform and we’re working on that already. Once that’s done we have to make the business case with Nintendo as to why they need to include it or offer an install process somehow. Flash and JS are easy for as I said, the perception is often that the web would simply “break” without them.
DS: that’s a whole different port I’d believe, but I can’t claim any real knowledge there so I’ll stop talking.
Yes, they do offer exciting new challenges and opportunities to think about though! Now I just have to get a Wii…
Run out an buy one ASAP. I. Love. Mine. It is simply a blast. Best piece of tech hardware I think I’ve ever bought (excluding my first Apple II that set my on the true path.)
That’s the plan, once I’m back home in SF (I’m in Copenhagen at company HQ at the moment!). It’s just a matter of getting home and buying one at this point…
Can you just “run out and buy one” over there? I had to get mine for 50 dollars extra from a friend who likes buying Wiis at the crack of dawn and sharking them off for more money.
You’ll enjoy it a lot. Reading this topic inspired me to go play for a bit. I voted on all the new Everybody Votes questions and did a Wii Sports Fitness Test (28, w00t!). It’s really fun to just turn on and play for 10 minutes (I would have played for hours if my Wiimote batteries weren’t so low). If only something like WiiCade could be done with Unity. That would mean getting the player to Opera, and having them interested in it.
Flash Lite supports most of Flash 7’s content with a few notable exceptions (mainly Flash Video) - but that’s more than enough for most casual Flash games if you program carefully.
Yep, it seems to be the old one supporting 1.1 and 2. Won’t be an issue for all stuff but especially games use the benefits of the as3 engine quite a lot.
Why does every console need a browser? I think it’s stupid to stick browsers in everything. I can understand wanting one for the DS, as you can carry it with you and gives you a mobile browser if you don’t already have a phone with a browser or a laptop or some other PDA type device… which is becoming fewer and few people. But at home, if I already have the internet, I probably have a computer. I can just use my computer, which is more elegant to use for browsing anyways. It’s more work to turn on the console wait for the browser software to load and then get to where I want to go rather than just opening my laptop or walking over to my computer to do the same thing. Silly IMO. We don’t need the interweb browser in everything that’s electronic.
I’ve found the Wii Browser useful on several occasions. Like when someone is sleeping upstairs (where my computer is), or if I need to just quick check something without running all the way up there.
I know people who love it for showing off YouTube videos and things like that to friends on their TV. Better than crowding around their computer monitors. Not the case for me, as I just have a computer hooked up to the HDTV all the time.
It’s the only way for a Joe Nobody to get their game on the Wii, too. (Via Flash)
