I was using 2020.3.X versions and everything was fine. But I recently installed 2021.3.f1 editor and now when creating a new project, Library folder is huge. A new created, empty 2D project is 1.25 GB, and PackageCache folder is 970 MB. When creating the same project in previous versions, the whole project is 135 MB and PackageCache is 65 MB.
On Library, I found these folders that were not present on previous versions: Bee, BurstCache, GridBrush, Search. And the rest of the folder and files in Library are bigger than before. I suppose some of this is intended because of the different versions, but I don’t think that this size is normal.
I already tried deleting Library folder and restarting the project, but when it creates again is almost (1.15 GB) the same size as before.
Library is always several gigs for me even in simple projects. It‘s nothing of concern, you can‘t do anything about it and the data exists to speed up a lot of things.
As to „huge“ wait till you have a project with tons of assets. I’ve had up to 60gb Library folder size (Unity 2018).
Extra unwanted packages in new projects (collab, testing, rider and other junk):
About the fastest way I have found to make a project and avoid all this noise is to create the project, then as soon as you see the files appear, FORCE-STOP (hard-kill) Unity (with the Activity Manager or Task Manager), then go hand-edit the Packages/manifest.json file as outlined in the above post, then reopen Unity.
Sometimes the package system gets borked from all this unnecessary churn and requires the package cache to be cleared:
Thanks! Deleting those packages saved 350 MB. Also this version come up with a set of packages for 2D that are another +800 MB. Didn’t notice this 2D pack before posting, this is the first time I switch year version and I was somewhat confused about what was causing the size difference.
That about 2D projects. On 3D URP I also have about 1 GB of size difference from 2020.X because the 12.X version of the com.unity.render-pipelines.universal package is about x10 bigger than the 10.X version.
