Now I’ve got your attention, do you think us developers worry too much about what other people are doing, and not enough about our own projects? ![]()
Sorry, I am working on an original Slender game. So, I dont know what you are talking about…
Need only 1k to finish the job so I gonna kickstart a 100k campaign.
Nope, I think that looking at what other people are doing gives a good view of what to do and what not to do, best way to do thing etc…
PS. Congratulations on 7k posts ![]()
Hehe. the title had me worried.
I think as well as focusing on our own projects, we should also helping other people keep their ideas original, and not ‘just another slender’ game.
Excellent question which promises a great debate ![]()
We’re talking about worldwide devs in general, right ?
If so I do think yes. I’ll use a trendy example : Kickstarter … KS projects do care way too much about their PR.
Way too fracking much. I can see devs now wasting some huge chunks of production time into monthes of PR. The “look at me I’m famous too” game. It seems like if you don’t create an award winning short movie for a KS project introduction, you’re not the trend. I don’t feel this is right.
I understand this is how marketing works, but let’s not blur the line between effective production and advertising.
But it was part of the game though … giving professional powers to non-professionals, aka the people. I wish more KS devs would stop being afraid of not having enough views, stop caring about fame, and put their hands in the charcoal without looking back.
In my very humble opinion, I do think a project doesn’t need flashy presentation at all. Just videos of the prototype running. Who cares about cgi intros, or devs playing a comedy short ? Backers are gamers, so they foremost want to see what game they will be playing, not a Comedy Central show.
But this is only about Kickstarter. In a broader view, I really feel like we, as a whole, are worrying way too much about other’s failures or successes, without worrying enough about what we are building in our own life.
But if I elaborate on that matter, it would take pages, so I’ll just shut up ![]()
edit : seems like I completely missed the point xD
My first thought was: ‘Hippo started ANOTHER KS?’ ![]()
Gigi
I try to learn from what others are doing. Not copy ideas, but see what kind of approach works for whatever and if it makes sense, adjust my own plans accordingly.
Regarding the Slenderman thing, I just give a little superior smirk on my own and move on.
Well played,
Well. Played… You got me.
No
This began as a facepalm. Then I saw that it was hippo who had posted it, and I was like “The world has gone mad!!!”
Not nice to tease, hippo. I had my troll face on and everything.
generally im most concerned in my own life and work. and the people who I have done work for (see how the products turn out)
I purposely will be most interested in peoples work if they will benefit me. But I think you already knew that ![]()
On a more serious note,
I feel that a lot of people do worry about others projects, it’s probably a GOOD idea to know how they turn out. If someone is making a similar game and it fails, find out why? Is it marketing? Is it the actual game? etc etc.
How all games succeed from unity has a view on indie development as a whole. It doesn’t matter how large or small it was, learn from others mistakes.
I look look at some projects and try to figure not why they failed (because they did reach the top 200) but why they fell off the charts so quickly (in a matter of weeks), vs why other games that have been in the top 200 for 2+ years.
It’s not nice to mess with other peoples’ minds, Robert.
