New to Unity, a question about a possible future project.

Hi

I’m fairly new to unity with only 6 months experience so far at a Diploma of IDM(Games). I have been thinking of a project I’d like to work on in the future but not sure how I’d script it/would it even be possible. Basically a feature in it would be the ability to dig tunnels in all directions. I have been looking on youtube and the asset store for relevant scripts or demo videos on terrain destruction but the best I could find was just vertical destruction, seen here.

I’m wondering if anyone could maybe share some knowledge of what I aim to do is possible,how difficult would it be and maybe even a few examples. I remember Red Faction 1 had a sort of digging system. Even something as simple as that, minus the rough edges, would be nice . See here for an example

That first video is for unity’s own terrain, cannot use that for making tunnels etc.

but those voxel engines would be perfect for it,
i have huge list here, see comments section also (some free, some commercial in asset store)

Thanks! I might have a look at voxels in more depth they were an option I had thought of. Are there any other ways though? I loved minecraft, but was hoping to avoid the blocky style. Something like in that second video but maybe less dated would be ideal.

yes, theres many of those non-blocky also, many in asset store too.
