New to Unity and Game Design in General. Need Help Creating A Visual Novel/Sci-FIStrategy Game.

Hey everyone. I’m a fairly new user to Unity and have been attempting to create a game in a manner described in the title: A visual novel strategy hybrid game that allows for gameplay using the two genres. I have some programming experience through Python and a little bit of Java and C++, (roughly the bare minimum in C++).So far, I’ve managed to create a basic main menu, a character selection screen, and several scenes that write text to the screen character by character, followed by simple “Next” and “Back” buttons, and that’s about it. I have no idea where to even begin on making certain elements of the game. Some of the things I want to include in the game are things such as AI, a galaxy map, (a tutorial to create something like this would be amazing), and turn based battles, all while including a visual novel aspect to the game, (if that makes sense). I’m basically lost as to how I would be able to go about doing this and was wondering if any of you helpful people could point me to the right direction whether it be through tutorials offered by Unity, or through guidance from other users here on the forums, or even YouTube videos; any help would be appreciated.

You may have already seen this advice in similar threads, but if you haven’t gone through the official Unity tutorials, you’re doing yourself a disservice. It may seem that they cover genres are topics totally unrelated to what you’re trying to do with your game, but they teach fundamental tools and principles that will equip you with the knowledge you need.

You feel lost because you don’t know how to translate your idea into code, game systems, or any number of Unity-provided components. This is something you learn how to do with experience. You may be lucky enough to get through the tutorials and feel you’re ready, or you may realize you need a few more practice games before you can handle the complexity of your game vision.

Everyone does the same thing when they’re first starting out. If you were to look through a list of similar threads in this subforum and compare those who listened to the “tutorials/start small” advice versus those who didn’t, I’d bet you’d see the people who listened have more success in the long run. The choice, though, ultimately, is yours of course.

Good luck!
